New ALICE data highlights the industries where workers are most likely to face financial hardship, even while helping power our economy every day. The affordability crisis is real across the U.S. and in Delaware County, with the cost of basics for a family of four at $81,852 in 2024, while many workers earned far less. A cook and a teller, two of the state’s most common jobs, both working full-time, brought in a combined $63,859. That’s $17,993 short of what’s needed just to get by. Across Ohio, financial hardship looks different from one county to the next. But in every community, households are working hard and still struggling to afford the basics. That’s why the #UnitedForALICE data matters. By measuring households in poverty and ALICE households with income above the poverty level but still unable to afford basics, the data paints a more complete picture of financial hardship statewide. And that picture helps local leaders and organizations respond with data-driven solutions that will benefit every community. You see ALICE every day — but you might not know it. ALICE = Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed Workers who are ALICE care for children, check out groceries, cook meals, and help with everyday banking needs. Even beyond the workplace, ALICE shows up for our communities across civic, social, cultural, religious, and recreational spaces. And yet, ALICE struggles to get by, with income above the Federal Poverty Level but less than the cost of basics in their counties. ALICE is everywhere. Let’s make sure ALICE is seen.
