🔬 Is a cure for type 1 diabetes in the near future? Two Upstate researchers think so. By combining bioengineering and islet transplantation research, Dr. Dadheech and Dr. Delibasi are working to develop an end-to-end treatment for patients. "This is our chance to make the community of Syracuse and Upstate a world leader in human health," says Dr. Dadheech. “We are closer than ever, and I urge the diabetes community, patient partners, and potential donors to come forward and help us build a real cure." 🧠 Tau is a protein that plays a role in Alzheimer’s disease. Upstate's Chris Gaiteri, PhD, is part of a team studying tau "seeds" -- a form of that protein -- in human brain tissue to understand their role in the progression of the disease. "So you have this seed that is essentially propagating along those physical pathways. And that may be very important in understanding how tau ends up, where it ends up." Gaiteri explains more about this multi-discipline study, and what they're learning about the development of Alzheimer's disease here ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gb3FdbGX #alzheimers #medicalresearch

Older adults are more vulnerable to serious flu infections; one Upstate researcher is trying to figure out why. Mobin Karimi MD, PhD, will be using a grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to study how certain immune cells protect the lungs. We are studying how a pathway called β-catenin helps these cells function properly," says Karimi. "The goal is to understand why these protective responses weaken with age and how they might be improved.” Read more about Karimi's study ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gGMsssxE #medicalresearch #aging #immunity
