A reminder: Emotional abuse is not always easy to recognize. It can develop slowly. A hurtful comment, repeated criticism, or pressure to question your own memory and judgment may begin to change how you see yourself. Over time, you might find yourself apologizing more often, second-guessing your decisions, avoiding certain topics, or feeling like you can never get things right. Disagreements happen in healthy relationships, but emotional abuse is different. It's a pattern of control, intimidation, or manipulation that can leave someone feeling afraid, diminished, or disconnected from their own sense of self. In this conversation, Rebecca Vinciquerra, M.A., Vera House’s E‑MDT Coordinator, shares what elder abuse can look like, why so many cases remain hidden, and how Vera House partners with older adults and community agencies to support each person’s wishes, dignity, and independence. Many people picture elder abuse as only physical harm, but it often looks very different. Financial exploitation, neglect, emotional abuse, and other violations of trust are impacting older adults every day, often at the hands of someone they know. The reality is sobering: for every reported case of elder abuse, an estimated 23 cases go unreported.
