💧 UNDERSTANDING BOIL WATER ADVISORIES PART 4: WHY DOES IT TAKE AT LEAST 24 HOURS? One of the most common questions we hear is: "The water is back on. Why is the boil water advisory still in effect?" The answer is simple: Laboratory testing takes time. After samples are collected, they are transported to a certified laboratory where technicians test the water for bacteria and other indicators of water quality. These tests cannot be rushed. The samples must be processed and monitored for a specific amount of time to ensure accurate results. Because of this, laboratory testing typically takes at least 24 hours. Until we receive confirmation that all samples meet water quality standards, the advisory must remain in place. We understand waiting can be frustrating, but this process helps ensure that every customer receives water that is safe and reliable. The advisory is lifted only after laboratory results confirm everything meets drinking water standards.

💧 UNDERSTANDING BOIL WATER ADVISORIES PART 3: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A WATER MAIN BREAK? Many customers see crews repairing a water main and assume the work is finished once the water comes back on. In reality, that is only the beginning. Here's what happens behind the scenes: 🔹 First, our crews repair the damaged water main. 🔹 Next, water service is restored to affected customers. 🔹 Then, we flush the water line to remove any air, sediment, or debris that may have entered the pipe during the repair process. 🔹 After flushing is complete, water samples are collected from specific locations in the affected area. 🔹 Those samples are delivered to a certified laboratory for testing. Every step is important. The goal is not only to restore water service but also to verify that the water continues to meet all state and federal drinking water standards. While customers may only see the repair work, there is a lot happening behind the scenes to ensure your water remains safe and reliable.

💧 UNDERSTANDING BOIL WATER ADVISORIES PART 2: WHY DOES A WATER MAIN BREAK CAUSE AN ADVISORY? Water pipes are designed to stay under constant pressure. That pressure does more than deliver water to your home—it also helps protect the water system. When a water main breaks, water rushes out of the damaged pipe and pressure in that area can drop. Anytime pressure drops below acceptable levels, regulations require water utilities to take precautionary measures. Why? Because when pressure is lost, there is a possibility that groundwater, dirt, or other contaminants could enter the pipe through the damaged area. This does NOT mean contamination occurred. It simply means there was an opportunity for contamination to occur. Since we cannot see bacteria or microorganisms with the naked eye, laboratory testing is needed to verify that water quality was not affected. That is why a boil water advisory may be issued after a water main break—even if the water looks clear and tastes normal. Our goal is always the same: protect public health while restoring service as quickly as possible.

💧 UNDERSTANDING BOIL WATER ADVISORIES PART 1: WHAT IS A BOIL WATER ADVISORY? One of the most common questions we hear is: "Does a boil water advisory mean my water is contaminated?" The answer is NO. A boil water advisory is a precaution that water utilities issue when there has been a loss of water pressure, usually caused by a water main break. Think of your water system like a straw. As long as everything is sealed and pressure is maintained, water moves safely through the pipes. If a pipe breaks and pressure drops, there is a possibility that outside contaminants could enter the water system. Most of the time, contamination does NOT occur. However, because protecting public health is our top priority, we issue a boil water advisory while we verify that the water remains safe through laboratory testing. A boil water advisory is not a sign that something is wrong with your water. It is a sign that we are taking extra precautions to ensure your water continues to meet all drinking water standards. Over the next week, we'll explain exactly what happens during a boil water advisory and answer some of the most common questions we receive.
