A new report from PwC projects that medical costs will grow by 9% in 2027, with AI tools being a major driver. Brutal, but here's the real story. There are two very different categories of AI being implemented in healthcare, and they pull the total cost of care in opposite directions. (1) Revenue cycle management (RCM) technology, which helps providers bill more for a visit that already happened. This is the type of AI flagged in the report, and it helps providers document and code the visit at higher severity so payers reimburse more per claim. 70% of health plans rank it among their top inflators. (2) Clinical AI that expands access, improves patient outcomes, and allows more care to be delivered by the same team. Clinical AI can handle high-volume workflows like intake, triage, follow-up, and patient questions 24/7 at near-zero marginal cost per interaction. As a result, providers can grow their panel without a proportional rise in cost. This is the kind of technology the same report tells health plans and employers to reward, and it's what we build at Amigo. In healthcare, the binding constraint is capacity. Clinician time is the scarcest and most expensive input in the system, and most providers can't hire their way to better access due to workforce shortages and rising labor costs. The ultimate goal of AI in healthcare should be to allocate care more efficiently instead of moving money around in the system. The technology worth investing in right now is the kind that makes care sustainable to deliver.

Excited and honored to announce that Dr. Jay Shah has officially joined Amigo as Chief Medical Officer, leading our clinical AI strategy. Jay is a nationally recognized cancer surgeon who spent years in clinical leadership at Stanford Health Care as Chief of the Medical Staff. He also led the Genitourinary Center at UT MD Anderson, launching their groundbreaking bladder cancer robotics program and building an enhanced recovery program for patients undergoing bladder removal surgery. Jay studied at Harvard University before earning his MD at Columbia University, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society, named Physician of the Year, and earned the Gold Foundation Excellence in Teaching Award. Few people have been closer to the day-to-day reality of running a health system, and he carries a deep understanding of what patients and providers need on both sides of the care equation. He's also an exceptionally kind individual who sees the best in everyone, and I leave every conversation with him already looking forward to the next one. It's a privilege and a responsibility to build AI that delivers care. Jay's clinical leadership alongside our Medical Advisory Board will ensure Amigo continues to deliver against the standards we owe to patients and providers. What happens when AI meets the patient? That was the question we put in front of a packed room at Amigo's NY Tech Week event last night, and the conversation was phenomenal. Our incredible moderator Jay Shah set the stakes. We've been through a shift like this before with social media, which promised deeper connection and left behind a long trail of unintended consequences. Instead of waiting for problems to surface, it's important to have proactive conversations like these. Komal Bajaj reminded everyone that you treasure what you measure. We have ambitious long-term goals for what AI will do, but the harder question is what you're measuring on day one. What are the leading indicators that tell you something is working before the big numbers show up? Kabir Daya made the case that AI should help clinicians work at the top of their license by standardizing care and acting as a second set of eyes during visits to surface things worth a closer look. The metric he watches most closely at Thriveworks is clinician NPS. Are clinicians not only adopting, but adopting happily, and is AI actually making their jobs easier? Claire Siegel described Humanaut Health's AI as an extension of their care team. What struck me was how their clinicians have embraced it and bring new use cases forward on their own, because they would rather spend time with patients than memorize protocols or answer questions that don't require their expertise. Kathleen Leger, MD provided insight into the challenges of providing personal, individualized care to every patient as an individual provider. AI has enabled her to build personalized protocols and capture every conversation, which means she can give unhurried, present care to every patient in front of her. A big thank you to our panelists and to everyone who came out to be a part of the conversation!
