A published author, a commercial pilot, spending his summer working at the Naval Safety Command, and invited to present his work at a national conference. He's doing great things now, so I can only imagine the impact he'll continue to make on the world. I've attended dozens, and, for the most part, they all tend to run together. You know what I haven't forgotten? ⚾️ Peter Davey, Ryan Gullum and I catching a Raiders game before Money 2020. 🏞 Wade Arnold and I meeting up on a rooftop bar before a Rockies game. 🏇 Tede Forman hosting the JH Payments Advisory Board at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Did we talk payments, business, and partnerships? Sure. Did we build stronger relationships? Absolutely. Thank you to Steve Kenneally for hosting the ABA Payments Committee (PSAC) for a group outing to see the Nationals v. Phillies. It was a blast hanging out with Kelly Burdette, Chase Riggins, Beth Kaweblum, Carolyn (Gullo) Criscitiello, Matt Ribbens, Eralda Hasani, Ryan Miller, Sarah Williams Ablett, and Rod Springhetti. I try to make our group events memorable. I once took our Chesapeake Bank Tech Advisory Board out for Tapas. Not your average dinner, and definitely a group favorite. DJ Seeterlin posted thisThe parking at Trader Joe's is notoriously bad. And they’re OK with it. But those holiday cookies and flowers are great. It’s actually all part of their strategy. We can learn from others outside our own industry. And even better if the lessons and stories are relatable. Trader Joe’s welcomes anyone into their store. They also recognize that strategic focus makes a better customer experience and makes them more successful. Which customers are choosing your bank? What problem are you solving better for them than anyone else? Are you making trade-off choices to focus your investment in the right people, products, and services? Or are you trying to be the best at everything for everyone, and end up being just ‘OK’ at all the things? Chris Nichols recently invited me to join him on the Community Bank Podcast from SouthState Correspondent Division. We explored the Trader Joe’s highly successful business strategy, and the lessons we can learn as bankers. I truly appreciate Chris inviting me to join this conversation. I highly respect Chris and really appreciate his insights and friendship. Credit to the Acquired podcast episode on Trader Joe’s. Between that 4-hour deep dive on this history of the company and the Michael Porter/Roger Martin framework Jason Henrichs and Madeline Fredin of Alloy Labs helped us adopt, we are making real advances in our Strategic Planning at Chesapeake Bank. I always enjoy talking about Strategy (and payments, and tech) with fellow bankers. DJ Seeterlin shared thisYou can't tell from the picture, but those glasses on the table hold the secret to instant payment interoperability. This is why I travel. This is why I spend hours working from a cramped airplane seat or on the edge of a hotel end table. At dinner after the Jack Henry Payments Advisory Council, Sergio, Maf, Robert, and I were riffing on the frustrations of building separate integrations at every FI for RTP and FedNow. And what happens with the inevitable competition over tokenized deposit networks? Within 10 minutes of spitballing ideas, Sergio is arranging wine glasses and tableware into a network diagram that would rival any McKinsey slide deck. Not to give away the answer, but the butter dish is the key ;-) Rusiru, you can expect a call any minute! There is something magic about leaning into learning from each other. It didn't take long for us to shift gears to solving cross-border stablecoin payments with KYC. We eventually had to phone a friend and pull Peter Glyman in for a text assist. Can't wait to POC this one with you, Pete! We didn't save all our deep thoughts for after dinner drinks. Kelly and I had a great time swapping approaches to innovation and moving AI down the field in our banks. AI transformation is more than a chatbot. It's our responsibility to illuminate and lead people through the murky waters of change. The real results aren't doing today's work faster. It will be doing things not previously possible. That's the growth mindset of AI transformation. The big consensus in the room was around Payment Hubs. Resoundingly, I heard from the bankers and payment pros in the room: orchestration across all rails, and make it SIMPLE for a small business, consumer or Treasury customer. I absolutely agree. The customer shouldn't have to care about the rail, only how much and how fast. Message me if you want to chat about how we are solving for this at Chesapeake Bank. DJ Seeterlin shared thisWould you rather be the best? Or your customer's favorite? Danny Meyer, Founder of Shake Shack and a dozen hugely popular hospitality brands, challenged me with that this week at Canapi Ventures' annual summit. At one point his restaurants were listed in the bottom of many ‘Best’ lists, but ironically were 7 of the 10 favorite places to eat in the city. The ‘Best’ is measured on specific criteria. My ‘Favorite’ is an emotional connection. Depending on your industry, maybe you have the crispiest french fries, the fastest online account opening, or the widest selection of loan products. You may be able to be ‘the best’ in one or multiple dimensions. You can optimize for those dimensions all day long. The real victory isn’t winning a scorecard, it’s being the customer's choice. Being someone's favorite speaks on multiple levels. You have the products they need, the experience they seek, and the accessibility they desire. It's about solving problems the way the customer prefers with their optimal experience. A Swiffer is not the best mop. It's not the least expensive mop. It is however the preferred method to get millions of floors as clean as people want them to be. This approach is not at odds with being the best for your customer, it's complementary. We shouldn't aim to be the best at a capability for everyone. Strategy is making the deliberate choices and trade-offs to be the absolute favorite for the customers we aim to serve. We do this by understanding them, their needs, and how to serve them the best.
