Salary: $75,000.00 - $90,000.00 annually

Description

The Director of Campus Safety administers the College’s policies to protect students, staff, and College property; supervises the College’s Campus Safety staff; directs vehicle use and parking and organizes security programs and training as appropriate.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Initiates and maintains overall responsibility for the development and implementation of approved policies and procedures for the safety and security of students, employees, college property and others.
  • Acts as liaison between Campus Safety and all College departments, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, fire departments and code enforcement agencies.
  • Collaborates with the President to provide Emergency Management oversight.
  • Coordinates campus safety education programs for both students and employees.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Compliance and Title IX Coordinator to ensure compliance with federal and state reporting requirements, including, but not limited to Clery Act reporting.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates Campus Safety personnel and monitors training to endure safety standards are maintained and all officers are trained, certified, and licensed according to the New York state Security Guard Act of 1992.
  • Maintains appropriate records and documentation, as well as schedules duty roster and prepares information for staff payroll for the approval of the Dean of Student Life.
  • Works regular shifts and substitutes for other Campus Safety personnel as required to maintain staffing levels and to ensure the safety and security of the college and its students.
  • Responsible for the issuance of College ID’s.
  • Updates and maintains a banned list for all persons not allowed on Paul Smith’s College property and/or not allowed in College buildings.
  • Initiates and maintains procedures that govern campus motor vehicle policies, including parking and traffic safety.
  • Responsible for routine monitoring of fire safety equipment, AEDs and other security equipment as appropriate etc.
  • Oversees or assists with investigations of accidents, violations of the Community Guide/Student Handbook, and other matters at the direction of the Dean of Student Life.
  • Ensures timely reporting of incidents on campus to senior leadership and appropriate personnel.
  • Provides leadership to address the safety needs of an increasingly diverse campus environment.
  • Maintain regular contact with Facilities and the offices in Student Life, including Residence Life, Student Wellness and Community Standards to identify problem areas and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Maintains good working relationships with all constituencies and departments on campus, as well as local and state police and fire departments.
  • Participates in college committees as assigned, such as the Emergency Management Planning Group, Incident Management Team, the Advisory Committee on Campus Security, Behavior Assessment Team, and Safety Net.
  • Participates in the planning and staging of special events, e.g. Open House, Orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend and Commencement, etc., as appropriate.
  • Assists with other duties as needed or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associates degree or higher preferred but not required. Previous experience in college safety, security or law enforcement required. Experience in a higher educational residential community is highly preferred.
  • Ability to act as a “Goodwill Ambassador” for the College, maintaining a positive and proactive attitude toward students, employees and guests to the campus.
  • Must be certified, or able to obtain certifications upon employment for Basic First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Emergency Oxygen Administration, Naloxone (Narcan) Administration, Blood Borne Pathogens, Mental Health First Aid, and maintain certification throughout employment.
  • Ability to provide (i.e. possess Trainer certifications) and oversee staff training is highly preferred.
  • Previous experience or background in emergency management/planning.
  • Interpersonal and conflict management skills required, as well as an interest in the quality of life of our campus population, and a commitment to the goals of the College.
  • Accomplishes tasks without close supervision.
  • Possesses appropriate certifications and licensing (or is immediately certifiable/licensable), including a valid New York State driver’s license as required to meet insurance carrier standards, and licensure required by the Security Guard Act of 1992.
  • Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.

Working Conditions And Physical Requirements

  • Requires ability to walk or move quickly for extended distances, climb stairs, sit at a workstation and lift up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to work regular business hours (M-F, 8-5), and some flexible hours including evenings, nights, and weekends, as needed to maintain appropriate staffing levels and cover special events.
  • Weather: Indoor/Outdoor. Moderate exposure to both cold and hot weather conditions.
  • Noise level: Minimal to moderate based on office setting.
