eNGINE is seeking a Junior Network Administrator with 1–2 years of Level 2 networking or NOC experience. This individual will monitor a large Cisco network environment, investigate network alerts, perform initial troubleshooting, assess the potential impact of outages, and clearly communicate technical findings to Network Engineers.
This is not strictly an alert-monitoring position. The successful candidate must understand what network alerts mean and be comfortable investigating issues involving Cisco switches, routers, interfaces, VLANs, trunks, routing protocols, and network connectivity.
Responsibilities
- Monitor enterprise Cisco network infrastructure for outages, performance issues, and availability alerts.
- Perform initial troubleshooting on Cisco routers, switches, interfaces, ports, and network connections.
- Investigate alerts involving VLANs, trunk links, OSPF adjacencies, DNS, DHCP, and IP connectivity.
- Log in to Cisco network equipment to review interface status, configurations, logs, and error conditions.
- Determine whether an outage affects one user, a subnet, a VLAN, a building, or the broader network.
- Identify the devices, users, applications, and locations potentially impacted by an alert.
- Troubleshoot Layer 2 and Layer 3 connectivity issues using the OSI model.
- Use tools and commands such as ping, traceroute, ipconfig, nslookup, and Cisco show commands.
- Gather technical evidence and clearly communicate findings to Network Engineers.
- Create detailed incident tickets and escalate issues according to established NOC procedures.
- Support troubleshooting involving VMware, Windows systems, Active Directory, servers, and websites when an issue may be network-related.
- Assist with incident response in a high-availability, 24x7 environment.
Required Qualifications
- Approximately 1–2 years of Level 2 NOC, network administration, or network support experience.
- Hands-on experience supporting Cisco routers and switches.
- Working knowledge of Cisco IOS and common troubleshooting commands.
- Understanding of switch ports, network interfaces, access ports, trunk ports, and link status.
- Strong knowledge of VLANs, including their purpose, scope, and relationship to switches and subnets.
- Knowledge of IPv4 addressing, subnet masks, default gateways, and subnet sizing.
- Understanding of Layer 2 switching and Layer 3 routing concepts.
- Familiarity with OSPF and the potential impact of a failed routing adjacency.
- Knowledge of DNS and DHCP, including how failures can affect network users.
- Experience using enterprise network monitoring and alerting platforms.
- Ability to determine the scope, severity, and potential impact of a network outage.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to relay technical findings to senior network personnel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Cisco CCNA certification or equivalent networking knowledge.
- Experience supporting a large enterprise, campus, or multi-location Cisco network.
- Familiarity with VMware, Active Directory, Windows Server, and basic systems administration.
- Experience working in a 24x7 NOC or another high-availability environment.
