- [Instructor] Platform engineering offers an approach to reclaiming lost velocity by supporting developers with an internal developer platform. Let's dive into how an IDP simplifies the job of developers. As a quick content note going forward, I'll use the terms internal developer platform, IDP, and developer platform interchangeably. The most important function of a developer platform is to simplify developers' interactions with all the tools, apps, and platforms that enable software delivery. Each of these systems has a similar job, to automate and simplify a part of the software delivery process. Let's take Jenkins as an example. The scope of a CI/CD system like Jenkins is to automate some of the tasks involved with delivering software, such as testing, compiling, and deploying. Instead of having to script each of these steps by hand, developers and operators can create a single Jenkins pipeline that includes all of these steps.
