IDB Invest Sustainability Week 2026 - Barbados brought together global thinkers for a week of thought-provoking discussions, candid exchanges and fresh perspectives. As innovation continues to be a priority for us, our BOLD Experience Hub created opportunities for delegates to speak with AI avatars, Amara and Milo, sharing their vision for sustainability across sectors. At the center of the Hub, our BE BOLD Mosaic Table created a natural meeting point where leaders from government, commerce and indigenous communities gathered to exchange bold ideas for a more resilient Caribbean. From panel discussions on stage to candid moments off stage, there was no shortage of insights to carry forward. This is an encouraging data point in a year when many sustainability professionals have been asking where the market is heading. Yes, the environment is more complex. Budgets are under pressure, expectations are evolving, and the role of the Chief Sustainability Officer continues to change. Reports like this are an important reminder that sustainability leadership continues to evolve alongside the businesses it serves. The conversations I'm having with clients reflect exactly that. Organizations are looking for leaders who can influence across the business, connect sustainability to commercial priorities, and build credibility in uncertain times. The newly released 2026 Weinreb Group Sustainability Recruiting CSO Report reinforces what we at Sustainability Women in the World (SW2) have long believed: Sustainability is here to stay. More importantly, it is transitioning from a specialized function to the core of business strategy and enterprise value creation. As sustainability becomes embedded across the business, the role of the Chief Sustainability Officer continues to evolve. Today’s most effective CSOs are not simply leading sustainability programs—they are enterprise leaders who collaborate across every business function—from finance, operations, R&D, supply chain, legal, HR, communications, and commercial teams—to help drive both top-line growth and bottom-line performance. Like CEOs, successful CSOs operate across the entire enterprise. In many ways, they serve as the stewards of a company’s license to operate, license to innovate, and ultimately its license to grow. Sustainability is the only profession designed to be unsustainable. The function whose entire job is to make other sectors sustainable is, in most organisations, a team of one – holding climate, human rights, biodiversity, assurance and the rest, usually without the budget or authority the role demands. And because we care, we make it work anyway. Until we can't. I loved writing this article for the Women in Sustainability Network. It's a subject that matters to me in a very personal way, as someone who's inhabited this space for twenty years. I've written about why sustainability is hard – and, more usefully, what actually helps. The short version: in this profession, community and support aren't nice-to-haves. They're essential.
