Andrew Adams’ Post

Six months ago, I started spending most of my time on AI to understand what it can meaningfully change about mental health care for providers and their patients. I’ve been consuming millions of tokens a week, stress-testing what's real, and working with our team to figure out where we can make the most impact. Headway has been innovating behind the scenes, and today we're accelerating our investment by acquiring the team behind Tezi, an AI-native company. Mental health is one of the most complex corners of healthcare. Providers spend too much time dealing with insurance, billing, and admin when they could be focusing on patients. Patients, meanwhile, struggle to find the right clinician, understand their coverage, or get an appointment when they need one. The connective tissue between patients, providers, and payers is fragmented in ways that make care harder to access and deliver. We believe humans plus AI will be better than either alone: clinicians supported by intelligent systems, and patients guided to the right care faster. We know we've only scratched the surface of what AI can do for Headway and the people it supports, and are investing heavily to learn the potential. The Tezi team are exceptional builders across engineering, product, and design who share our conviction that the hardest problems require humans and AI working together. They built systems where human judgment and AI collaborate inside complex, real-world workflows, removing the tedious stuff so professionals can focus on the work that actually requires their expertise. That approach maps directly to what we're building at Headway. Raghavendra Prabhu, who founded and led Tezi, is joining as VP of Engineering. He's built and scaled systems at Covariant, Thumbtack, Pinterest, Twitter, Google, and Microsoft. I was blown away by what he and the team built, and I'm thrilled they're joining us to do this work for our 70,000+ providers and the millions of patients they serve. If you want to build at the intersection of AI and health care with a team that's moving fast and thinking big, we're hiring: https://headway.co/careers

Andrew Adams, Six months of stress-testing before moving - that's how you know the signal is real. The hardest part isn't the AI, it's helping 70,000 providers actually trust it. Raghavendra Prabhu's systems background might be exactly what bridges that gap. Congrats to the whole Headway team, this one feels different.

Given all the well-deserved excitement that Agentic AI is generating with the promise of automating administrative and operational workflows in healthcare we need to exercise caution to avoid over-reliance on automation in every aspect of healthcare. These systems should operate with human-in-the-loop oversight, especially when it comes to diagnostic support, care planning and decision support. I refer you to a recently published article by my colleagues in Nature Medicine who stress tested ChatGPT Health’s triage recommendations. The results are eye opening and stress the need for caution when deploying such tools into practice across all aspects of healthcare: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-026-04297-7

This is inspiring to see. There’s a real balance between testing, validating alignment, and staying grounded in the mission. One of the biggest challenges is approaching AI with rigor while keeping the end user—both clinicians and patients—at the center. The AI + provider relationship isn’t binary. There’s a lot of nuance, especially in a high-stakes and underserved part of the healthcare system. Thoughtful integration, paired with rigorous testing, creates the conditions for meaningful adoption and better outcomes across the ecosystem.

This is the right play, Andrew. The ‘connective tissue’ in mental health care is often where the most expensive "Change Tax" is paid, usually in the form of administrative friction and fragmented data. As an Operational Architect, I’ve found that the real win isn't just AI agents, but the Hardened Infrastructure that allows human judgment and AI to collaborate without recursive loops. Integrating AI-native teams like Tezi into complex workflows is how we finally move from 'Managing the Wreckage' to 'Engineering the Outcome.' Excited to see how Raghavendra and the team harden that perimeter for the 70k+ providers on the platform.

The "humans plus AI will be better than either alone" framing is exactly right — and the hardest part of making that real in mental health is figuring out where the handoff lives. The admin and billing layer is a clear win for AI. But there's another layer that's harder: the 167 hours between sessions where patients are living their lives and clinicians have zero visibility. That's the gap Stillpoint is built for — not replacing the clinician, but making sure they're not walking into sessions blind. Dr. Robert Gore suggested I reach out to you directly. Would love to share what we're building.

Just started using Headway Scribe today and it is AWESOME! I was impressed with the quality of the notes it generated on day one. Having used other AI-generated note takers in the past, I am very comfortable explaining to my clients the benefits of using a note-taker AI. And personally, it allows me to have a much better work life balance and allows me to put more attention into the session with my client. The difference of knowing that I will have a generated note to edit at the end of each session is huge, rather than racing through writing a note between sessions or spending hours after the work day catching up on notes! Thank you, @Headway!!
