From Classroom to Rooftop – A Solar Education Story Over a year ago, I announced that we were working on the next generation of solar education – together with Colegio Fervan in Colombia. 🌞 Today I want to share what came out of it. To be honest: it moved me more than I expected. What started as a curriculum concept became a 24.8 kWp solar installation on the school's own roof. What really impressed me was how teacher Martha Medina and her colleagues took an idea and made it their own. They restructured their curriculum around solar energy – across subjects, across grade levels. They brought in partners, invited parents, created a STEAM class from scratch. Nobody asked them to go that far. They just did. And then there were the 44 students who spent a year analyzing sites, calculating energy needs, planning components – and finally presenting their results to a jury of experts. Not only as a school exercise. As a real plan for their own school. When I heard about them standing up in front of the jury and explaining their work with confidence, I thought: this is exactly why we started this. The freEnergy team provided the framework. But the people at Colegio Fervan – the teachers, the students, the school leadership – they are the ones who turned a project idea into a project success. I'm genuinely grateful for that. It’s Youth Month - time to celebrate the potential of young people and strengthen pathways into future-ready opportunities! Through our Career Path Development for Employment (CPD4E) project, we support young people to gain the skills needed to access jobs in Just Energy Transition sectors - helping to reduce youth unemployment while opening doors in growing, renewable energy industries. One of our initiatives is the Certificate of Compliance (CoC) Training, where participants gain practical skills to install Solar PV systems and issue Certificates of Compliance - official documents confirming electrical installations meet safety standards, essential in the renewable energy sector. Our participant, Nomasonto Mbele, shares her reasons for joining the programme: "To me, being part of this programme will help me a lot because I’ll be much more employable. There are many qualified electricians out there, but if you have something extra, it’s much better. I chose the career in electrical engineering because I enjoy working with my hands rather than sitting in an office. I now can go out there and face the challenges that are there." To date, we’ve supported over 1,500 young people, helping them gain the skills, confidence, and certifications to step into the renewable energy workforce. Career Path Development for Employment (CPD4E) is a Multi-Donor Initiative commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-funded by the European Commission and SECO Economic Cooperation and Development. From classroom to wind energy career: where does the journey start? At the Nordex Group, our #ApprenticeshipTeam is inspiring the next generation of #STEMtalent, especially girls, to explore the possibilities. Through the #mintpink initiative by #initiativeNAT, we welcomed 15 students from Buckhorn Gymnasium to our #GlobalTechnicalAcademy in Hamburg, Germany. During their visit, the students gained first-hand insights into wind energy: from a guided tour of our technology to an interactive wind energy quiz led by our apprentices. The day wrapped up with an open chat with our role models Lenka Fuskova, Dr. (Senior Expert Tech QM Metallurgy Nacelle), #AnikaSchönicke (Group Lead Structural Methods and Tools), and #AngelicaEspinosa (System Lead Power Train), who shared their career journeys. By connecting early curiosity with real-world insights, we aim to empower young talent and showcase the diverse opportunities within renewable energy. It was a pleasure to conduct a technical training session for the students of MBM College during their 45-day internship program at Rama Reflection India, an EPC company specializing in Solar Power Projects. During the session, we discussed several important topics related to the solar industry: 🔹 Basic Solar Knowledge 🔹 PVsyst Report Preparation & Analysis 🔹 Solar PV Module – Technical Overview 🔹 Inverter Basics & String Calculation 🔹 Transformer – Working & Applications 🔹 Single Line Diagram (SLD) Understanding 🔹 Rooftop Solar & PM-KUSUM Project Design and Installation 🔹 AC & DC Cable Selection and Applications The session focused on bridging the gap between academic learning and practical industry requirements. Students actively participated and gained valuable insights into solar power plant design, engineering, and execution. We had a wonderful time with the students from the TRIO, Upward Bound Program! We partnered with Karla M. Frias-Romaine from Southeastern Wind Coalition, to introduce students to exciting opportunities in entrepreneurship, innovation, and renewable energy. Students learned about academic programs, resources, and scholarship pathways at University of New Orleans and gained valuable insight into the wind energy industry and emerging career opportunities. We also introduced students to our virtual reality wind turbine activity and held a major exploration activity facilitated by Innovation Intern, Darid M. Quiroz. Through interactive learning, students discovered new academic and career possibilities while exploring the future of innovation and renewable energy!

Verdant Solar is proud to partner with Sabah Entrepreneurs Transformation (SET) and Montfort Youth Training Centre (MYTC) to empower Sabah's next generation through renewable energy education, skills development, and career opportunities☀️ Through this collaboration, we are combining sustainability, technology, and entrepreneurship to create meaningful pathways for young talents to thrive in the green economy. As part of our CSR initiative, Brightening Lives, Empowering Futures, Verdant Solar will install a 27 kWp rooftop solar PV system at MYTC and develop a Basic Solar PV Learning Module that equips students with practical knowledge in solar technology, safety, and installation techniques. The programme is designed to prepare participants for future careers and internship opportunities within the renewable energy sector. Gippsland New Energy Scholarship - applications now open! Are you the next renewable energy leader in Gippsland? I want to hear from you. For those of you who read my memoir Here Comes the Sun (and made it to the last chapter), you would have read that we formed an initiative called the Gippsland New Energy Foundation. A percentage of proceeds from book sales were directed into the program and we now have $7,500 to commit to the scholarship(s). Given that sales have flatlined after a couple of years, I can safely draw a line under it now 😂 Applications are now open. The intent is to support the next generation of renewable energy leaders (residing in the Latrobe Valley/Gippsland region) and accelerate the transition towards a world powered by clean energy. The funds can be put towards the following: - University or TAFE fees. - Apprenticeship or trade training costs. - Textbooks, tools and equipment. - Travel and accommodation associated with study. - Professional development courses or industry certifications. - Attendance at conferences or work placements. Great turnout with over 50 colleagues from across Daikin UK, Saltire Facilities Management and Robert Heath Heating joining our introductory session on becoming a STEM Learning UK Ambassador. That’s 50 people willing to give their time to inspire the next generation. A special thank you to Yasmin Khan from STEM Learning UK for leading the session and helping us understand the real impact STEM Ambassadors can have in schools and communities. For me, this is what social impact looks like in practice. Not policies. Not statements. People. Becoming a STEM Ambassador means stepping into schools, colleges and community spaces to talk about careers, engineering, renewables, heat pumps, sustainability and showing young people what’s possible. Because young people can’t be what they can’t see. If they never meet an engineer, a retrofit specialist, a sustainability manager or a technical trainer, how do they know those careers exist? This matters to us as a business. It strengthens our communities. It builds our future workforce. It shows that decarbonisation is not just about technology, it’s about people. Most importantly, it might just be the spark that changes someone’s direction. According to My Energy Future industry research conducted by OPITO , 67% of participants said they are likely to pursue a career in energy because of the good pay, career development opportunities, and job security. However, the research also found that many young people still perceive three main barriers when considering a career in the energy sector. We were proud to welcome students in the Summer Carbon Management Fellows program to GE Vernova’s Greenville, South Carolina, campus for a hands-on look at the future of energy. The experience helped bridge classroom learning, research, and industry practice, allowing students to see how their work fits within broader energy challenges and opportunities. Students had the opportunity to engage with GE Vernova professionals and learn more about carbon management, clean energy systems, and the technologies helping advance cleaner, more reliable power. Through this program, students are tackling a project-based case study focused on whether a natural gas power plant should be retrofitted with carbon capture technology — exploring the technical, operational, policy, and economic factors that shape decarbonization decisions. We’re inspired by the talent, curiosity, and commitment these students brought to the experience, and we’re honored to support the next generation of energy leaders. The site visit was a valuable part of the six-week hybrid program sponsored by Georgia Tech and GE Vernova, which focuses on carbon capture technologies, clean energy systems, and team-based problem-solving. Through this collaboration, students are gaining exposure to emerging career pathways while developing the skills and perspective needed to contribute to the future of energy.
