There was a time when a great salesperson could build an entire business. They knew how to prospect. They knew how to handle objections. They knew how to negotiate. They hit quota. They closed deals. And honestly, that was enough. But something changed. Buyers became smarter. Information became accessible. Trust became harder to earn. Today, before responding to a sales email, prospects check LinkedIn. Before taking a meeting, they search for leadership. Before believing a pitch, they look for proof. And increasingly, they're asking a different question: "Where are the founders?" They want to know whether the people behind the business truly understand the problem they're solving. Are they building in public? Do they talk about failures as openly as successes? Can they handle criticism? Do they ask questions? Do they invite challenges to their thinking? Do they genuinely care about customer outcomes? Or are they simply trying to fill another sales pipeline and hit another quarterly target? Sales isn't dying. Anonymous selling is. Buyers want access to the people behind the business before they commit to the business itself. But I do believe the traditional definition of sales is slowly declining. The future belongs to founders who are willing to step into the market themselves. To roll up their sleeves. To get uncomfortable. To share what they're learning. To create value long before asking for business. To build an ecosystem of trust before building a pipeline of opportunities. Because customers don't just want a vendor. They want partners who are invested in the same outcome. And that starts with visibility. Not the visibility of a company. The visibility of the people leading it. Credibility is the new distribution channel.
This makes a lot of sense Durga Balakrishnan. In the age of information and easy accessibility, it matters to our clients to know who the people behind the organisation or team are, are they really focused on solving the challenges they claim and are they worth trusting? The sales fluff that got people deals in the past, don’t work anymore.
