When GPS satellites were first deployed in the 1970s and 1980s, the infrastructure investment was enormous and GPS receivers were expensive, bulky, and reserved for military or specialized industrial applications. Today, we take global positioning for granted because smartphones and vehicles seamlessly use this infrastructure every day.
