For years, those of us working in digital health, biosensing, and preventive medicine have been circling the same core truth: healthcare still runs on snapshots. A lab test, a yearly check-up, a doctor's appointment. Meanwhile, the body changes every second. The vision of moving beyond that, toward continuous, preventive, personalized health, has long felt like a future we were working toward but couldn't quite touch. But that has shifted. In the last year especially, it feels like prevention-based deeptech solutions are starting to arrive in reality — and that Germany and Europe are becoming increasingly determined to play an active role in shaping this change rather than watching it happen elsewhere. This week brought one of those signs. Merck Gruppe dedicated this year's Future Insight Prize to Smart Health Sensing and non-invasive early disease detection. Congratulations to Vasilis Ntziachristos - the work is extraordinary, and the recognition is well deserved! I had the honour of joining the panel discussion on preventive health alongside Can Dincer, Emre Ozcan, PhD, Karina Karolina De Santis, and Wolfgang Wick, moderated by Julien Saint-Andrieux. We took a full two hours to go into it - and honestly, it felt like we could have kept going. What made it so energizing was that the conversation didn't stay on stage. The audience pushed it further, with sharp questions, real experience, and genuine interest. To me, that was the strongest signal of the day. A few years ago, many of these topics still felt futuristic. Today, people are actively debating how to bring them into everyday healthcare. Europe's challenge has never been a lack of brilliant science. Our challenge is being bold enough to turn scientific breakthroughs into solutions that reach people. This year's Future Insight focus on Smart Health Sensors feels like another step in that direction: preventive and data-driven healthcare steadily moving from the margins toward the mainstream. The future of healthcare will not be built by waiting for disease. It will be built by understanding health earlier. For decades, healthcare systems have been designed to treat illness after it occurs. US$700 million. That is the latest vote of confidence in the future of preventive healthcare. Stockholm-based Neko Health has announced a US$700 million Series C funding round ahead of launching its first U.S. clinic later this year. Co-founded by Spotify CEO Daniel Ek and Hjalmar Nilsonne, Neko Health is reimagining healthcare by shifting the focus from treating disease to detecting risk before symptoms appear. Its flagship 60-minute health assessment combines advanced imaging, sensors and AI to capture millions of health data points, screening for skin abnormalities, cardiovascular risk, metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes and other early indicators of disease—all within a single visit. In my latest Forbes column, I explore the thought that some forms of preventive care may be creating more health anxiety than better health. We're surrounded by more health data than ever before, but more information doesn't automatically lead to better decisions. Without context and trusted relationships, patients can end up chasing every metric instead of focusing on what actually improves their health. As healthcare continues to embrace AI, wearables, biomarker testing, and personalized medicine, we have an opportunity to ask a bigger question: How do we give people more insight without creating more fear?
