Microsoft is kicking OpenAI's image generator out of its own products. In PowerPoint and Bing, images are now drawn not by OpenAI's model, but by its own — MAI-Image-2. Microsoft's head of AI models Mustafa Suleyman explained it this way: "faster, cheaper, better quality, keeps users more engaged." "Cheaper" is listed second here, not "ours clearly beats theirs." At the same time, MAI-Image-2 sits in the top three on the Arena generator leaderboard — but not in first place. So this isn't a story about OpenAI's images suddenly getting worse. OpenAI just shipped GPT-5.6, and it's already the default model inside Microsoft 365 Copilot. That's a fast rollout for anyone still treating "which model powers this feature" as a static decision. What stands out isn't the benchmark chart, it's the pattern: frontier model ships, then within days it's quietly running your Word, Excel, and Copilot Chat workflows without you choosing it. For teams building on top of GPT-4o or GPT-5.5 today, this is a reminder that the underlying model is a moving target, not a fixed dependency. In practice this means prompt behavior, latency, and even cost profiles can shift under a product you didn't touch. Good RAG and agent architectures are supposed to absorb that (abstracted model layer, evals that catch regressions, fallback routing) but plenty of production systems still hardcode assumptions about a specific model's quirks.
