If there was ever a time to pay attention to women's sports, it's now. Women's sports continue to prove that growth isn't coming, it's already here. Over the past few weeks alone, we've seen some incredible milestones across professional women's sports: 🏀 The WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) recently announced that the regular season will expand to 50 games beginning in 2027, another sign of the league's rapid growth and increasing demand from fans. 🏀 This season also marks the WNBA's 30th anniversary, celebrating three decades of progress while continuing to set new standards for professional women's basketball. The recent anniversary game between the Los Angeles Sparks and New York Liberty showcased just how far the league has come. 🏀 The Toronto Tempo continue to build excitement ahead of their inaugural season, including a July 10 game in Montreal that has the potential to set a new attendance record for professional women's basketball. 🏒 The PWHL is also making major moves. Following expansion to Vancouver and Seattle, the league is adding four more teams, PWHL Hamilton , PWHL Detroit , PWHL Las Vegas, and PWHL San Jose, while the recent draft and expansion process continue to create new opportunities for athletes across North America. It's exciting to watch these leagues grow, break records, expand into new markets, and create more opportunities for athletes, staff, and future sport leaders. Alabama's Basketball Talent Deserves More Opportunities I've spent a lot of time studying the grassroots basketball landscape, and one thing continues to stand out to me: Alabama has incredible basketball talent, yet many of its top players are forced to leave the state to pursue opportunities on the major shoe circuits. That means long drives for families, more travel expenses, and young athletes joining programs in neighboring states simply because the opportunity doesn't exist close to home. To me, that's a gap worth solving. This isn't about taking players away from existing programs or pretending Alabama doesn't already have great coaches and organizations. Quite the opposite. Alabama has produced outstanding players and continues to develop high-level talent every year. The question is: Why should that talent have to look elsewhere for national opportunities? I believe Alabama is ready for a premier grassroots basketball program that can compete on the national stage while giving elite players a chance to represent their home state. That's the opportunity I'm exploring. My goal is to help build an organization that develops players the right way, creates meaningful exposure for college recruiting, and gives families another option without requiring them to travel hundreds of miles just to access the highest levels of competition. Building something like this takes more than one person. It takes coaches who believe in developing young people, business leaders who see the value of investing in the next generation, community advocates who want to elevate basketball in Alabama, and strategic partners who share the vision of creating something that can have a lasting impact. I'm actively looking to connect with people who believe Alabama can become a destination not a state that talented players feel they have to leave. The recent World Cup run—and exit—offered a clear window into American soccer’s strengths and structural limits. We have massive participation, passionate fans, world-class athletes, and growing professional infrastructure. Yet the men’s national team continues to fall short of what our resources suggest is possible. In my new piece for the Carolina Journal, I argue that the deeper issue is not a lack of talent or interest, but a “managed” system that has prioritized stability over open competition. From the federal framework that privileges a single national governing body to MLS’s closed, single-entity model with no promotion/relegation to a youth development pathway that too often filters by family resources rather than raw ability—the current structure creates barriers where a more dynamic market could create pathways. As a think tank CEO, a middle school soccer coach, and a parent with a daughter in club soccer, I see both the promise and the friction up close. America doesn’t need more top-down management of the sport. We need incentives that reward merit, broaden talent identification, and let private investment and competition drive development. The recent failure of the US Men’s National Team has sparked a wave of familiar demands for change, yet most critics are entirely missing the root cause of the issue. The real barrier holding "American soccer" back isn’t tactica it’s structural. The modern U.S. landscape has mistakenly replaced true, meritocratic sports academies with a hyper-commercialized, for-profit "pay-to-play" model where athletic elite status is bought rather than earned. Look back at Landon Donovan, one of the greatest American players of the last 20 years. He was raised by a single, low-income mother and relied on (private patrons and people sponsoring him) out of goodwill a talent-first development structures a path that is virtually nonexistent in today's predatory, high-priced youth club system. If Donovan were a kid today, he would likely be priced out of the sport entirely, proving that the current system prioritizes wealth over raw potential. This institutional efficiency gap becomes glaringly obvious when you look at the global sports landscape. Even in North America's traditional powerhouses the NBA, MLB, and NHL the United States routinely underperforms on a per-capita basis against tiny, meritocratic nations like Lithuania, Curaçao, or Finland, despite the U.S. owning over 75% of the professional franchises. The only reason the U.S. survives domestic sports deficiencies is because they monopolize the infrastructure, but they can't rely on that cushion in a truly global game. The reason the U.S. cannot dominate soccer is simple: the rest of the world actually treats it like a serious, hyper-meritocratic pursuit. Until "American soccer" burns down the pay-to-play gatekeeping and builds a system that scouts the streets instead of tax brackets, the USMNT will continue to lag behind the rest of the world.

More than 40 Division I Olympic sports programs, often referred to as non-revenue generating sports, have been cut since the House v. NCAA lawsuit was settled last year. The NCAA’s Division I Board of Directors also approved smaller rosters for most non-revenue sports.The NCAA capped men’s and women’s track rosters at 45. For comparison, the Gophers men’s track roster had 68 athletes six years ago. The last two NBA Drafts have officially proven that New England is a premier breeding ground for elite basketball talent. For a long time, areas like the DMV, Atlanta, or Southern California dominated the draft night headlines. But right now? New England grassroots basketball isn't just on the map, it’s sitting at the absolute top of it. Look at the history this region has made over the last two years alone: - Back-to-Back #1 Picks: Brockton, Massachusetts native AJ Dybantsa going #1 overall to the Wizards, right on the heels of Newport, Maine’s own Cooper Flagg going #1 overall to the Mavericks the year prior. Two straight years of absolute New England dominance at the very top of the board. - New Hampshire Excellence: Ebuka "Abu" Okorie making history out of Nashua and Brewster Academy, going 17th overall to become the highest drafted player out of NH ever. - Massachusetts Represented: Framingham, MA native Alex Karaban, fresh off winning multiple NCAA Championships with UConn, locking down his well-deserved spot in the first round. What Does This Mean for the Region? This isn't just a coincidence, it's a testament to the incredible infrastructure being built at the grassroots level. From local AAU programs and dedicated youth coaches to the prestigious prep school circuits like the NEPSAC, the development pipeline in New England is working at an elite level. Local kids don't have to look to New York or the West Coast for inspiration anymore. They can look right in their own backyards to see NBA blueprints. The culture is shifting, the gyms are packed, and the scouts are staying in New England. The future of Northeast basketball has never looked brighter. Today’s player pool is defined by multiple routes to the top. Some stars emerged through the Youth Export pathway, leaving the United States as teenagers to join elite European academies and accelerating their development against the world’s best competition. Others represent the success of MLS academies, progressing through professional environments before earning moves abroad. A growing group of dual nationals, developed entirely within European systems, adds another layer of tactical sophistication and global experience. The changing role of college soccer is equally significant. Once the foundation of the national team, the NCAA pathway has evolved into a specialist route, producing late developers, goalkeepers, and physically mature defenders who benefit from additional time before entering the professional game. Players such as Matt Turner and Tim Ream illustrate how the collegiate system remains valuable, not as the primary engine of elite talent, but as a crucial development pathway. Meanwhile, MLS academies have become the backbone of domestic production. Clubs such as FC Dallas, the Philadelphia Union, the New York Red Bulls, and NYCFC have created distinct development identities, producing players with technical ability, tactical awareness, and professional readiness. Their impact has fundamentally altered the economics of American soccer, turning the country from a talent importer into a global exporter. The roster also reveals a clear positional divide. Attacking talent is increasingly shaped by European exposure, where creative players are identified and developed at younger ages. Defensive positions remain more influenced by domestic systems, where physical development, leadership, and tactical maturity are emphasized. The result is a hybrid American model: a combination of MLS infrastructure, European education, and traditional developmental pathways. NCAA Ends Redshirts, Approves Sweeping Five-Year Eligibility Rule The NCAA approved a major eligibility change on Tuesday. The new rule will reshape college football, basketball, and other sports. Athletes now receive five years of eligibility within a five-year window. That clock begins after high school graduation or an athlete's 19th birthday. The earlier date starts the countdown. The rule removes the traditional redshirt system. Previously, athletes could compete during four seasons across five calendar years....

Project B continues to build credibility ahead of its January 2027 launch. After assembling an elite women’s roster, the league has now appointed former NBA player and executive Landry Fields as Head of Men’s Basketball. Fields brings experience from every level of the game: • NBA player with the New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors. • Former executive with the San Antonio Spurs organization. • Most recently General Manager of the Atlanta Hawks. What stands out most is Project B’s long-term strategy. Rather than competing directly with existing leagues, it’s positioning itself as a global, athlete-led basketball platform that complements the current ecosystem. A few things worth watching: • Athletes receive equity and a seat at the table. • Women’s basketball was established as the foundation from day one. • The league is building a pipeline of established stars alongside emerging global talent. • Games will be played across major cities in Asia and Europe. • Distribution is built for today’s audience through YouTube and a streaming-first approach. This is another example of how sports properties are evolving beyond the traditional league model by combining athlete ownership, global expansion, and digital-first distribution. If you’ve played high-level sports, you quickly learn two things. Hard work and practice can take you a long way. But only so far, because not all humans are born equal in terms of talent. In team sports you learn, too, that a well-coached team of good players can beat a poorly coached team of better players. And you learn about how to lose with a modicum of good grace and never to gloat about winning. Best of all, you learn that competitive sport is the truest home of merit. No team wanting to win indulges in, or believes in, DEI, affirmative action or identity politics and the need to have quotas for races or sexes. The best person makes the team or the team won’t win.
