I wrote a blog post for Fastly on agentic commerce, payments, and where the edge fits in. AI agents are moving closer to real commerce flows: discovery, checkout, payments, and fulfillment. That shift brings a new set of infrastructure questions around trust, authorization, payment verification, and traffic control. The post looks at the protocol landscape taking shape and why the edge is a practical place to enforce policy before agent traffic reaches the origin. https://lnkd.in/e5TRXmd5

#AI is changing how customers shop. Trust will determine who they buy from. As AI begins making purchasing decisions on behalf of consumers, merchants will need more than fast checkout. They will need payment credentials that are secure, trusted, and always up to date. Network tokenization and Web SDKs provide that foundation. They reduce fraud, minimize declines from expired cards, simplify secure checkout, and help protect every transaction without adding friction to the customer experience. For merchants, that means higher conversion, stronger customer confidence, and fewer lost sales. The next competitive advantage in eCommerce won’t be another payment method. It will be earning trust in every transaction. #AI #NetworkTokenization #WebSDK #eCommerce #DigitalPayments #Payments #Fintech

Nuvei and Visa have successfully demonstrated a live agentic-commerce transaction where an AI agent initiated and completed a purchase using tokenized credentials on live payment rails. "Agentic commerce is the next evolution of digital commerce, with AI not just finding products but initiating purchases," said Phil Fayer, Chair and CEO of Nuvei. There are now four competing standards for how an AI agent pays for your groceries. Here's the map. 1/ ACP. OpenAI and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Protocol. Born inside ChatGPT checkout, now the discovery first standard merchants plug into. 2/ UCP. Google's Universal Commerce Protocol. Launched in January with Shopify, Visa, Mastercard and two dozen retailers already signed. The coalition play. 3/ Trusted Agent Protocol. Visa's own layer for proving an agent is who it says it is. As of this month it's being aligned to work with ACP. The networks are not picking a side, they're taxing all of them. 4/ Agent Pay. Mastercard's framework. Agentic Tokens bind a card to one specific agent, one merchant scope, one consent rule. The card number never moves.

Agentic commerce stopped being a demo and is now reality. In June, Visa + OpenAI and Mastercard separately moved agent-initiated payments into real infrastructure — tokenized credentials, verified agent identity, built-in spend controls. Pair that with open standards like Google's AP2 and Anthropic's MCP, and AI agents can now discover catalogs and complete checkout on a shopper's behalf. Here's the uncomfortable part for commerce brands: most storefronts were built for a human cursor, not a machine reader. If an agent can't parse your product data, pricing, and checkout, you're invisible to a channel your customers are already starting to use. This is a systems question before it's a marketing one — product feeds, API checkout, identity, and authorization all have to be ready. We help commerce companies get their platforms agent-ready. AI agents made 165 million payments through one protocol by April. Total volume: $50 million. Do the math. The average payment was about 30 cents. The big card networks launched agent-payment products last month, and the consensus is that agentic commerce will run on the same rails as e-commerce. Here's the problem: a 30-cent payment doesn't survive card economics — fixed fees eat the whole transaction. Machine customers don't fill shopping carts. They buy API calls, datasets, compute. Thousands of tiny purchases. That's exactly why we made USDT available on Lightning via Taproot Assets at Speed: sub-cent fees, instant finality. When your next customer is software, that's the checkout it expects. If you sell APIs, data, or anything an agent might buy, you can accept USDT over Lightning with Speed merchant (www.tryspeed.com) today. What's the first thing your business would sell to an AI agent? #AgenticCommerce #Stablecoins #LightningNetwork #Payments

An interesting article from PYMNTS, where Adyen gives a rating to where agentic commerce is today and will be next year. Spoiler, but it is notably cautious. Adyen's head of agentic commerce, Karan Katyal, argues that the AI agents themselves are not the core problem. The real constraint is checkout, integration, and security infrastructure. In other words, agentic commerce's bottleneck is payments. ❗On a scale from 0 to 5 on where agentic commerce is today, Adyen gave it a rating of 𝟬.𝟱. A rating of 5 means agents are fully embedded into the e-commerce process. Today, the market is still far from that point. By next year, Adyen expects that rating to reach 𝟭.𝟱. For one of the finance industry’s hottest topics, alongside stablecoins, that is a cold shower. However, banks and fintechs should view this signal as strategic input. The focus should be on becoming a trusted infrastructure layer while managing the new fraud vectors autonomous agents introduce. --- 💭 How can banks and fintechs make payments trusted enough for autonomous agents without adding friction to checkout? 📖 PYMNTS' interview, with further insights, can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eV-mcPS6

Agentic commerce will scale on trust, not automation The main barrier to agentic commerce is not AI capability. It is trust in how payments are executed. Research from Commerce and PayPal shows UK shoppers are increasingly open to AI-assisted buying, but they want control at the point of purchase. In a survey of 1,000 online shoppers, 64 per cent said they would use agentic AI tools, while 83 per cent said those platforms must offer payment security equal to or better than current online methods. That is a significant signal for banks, payment providers and merchants. Consumers are willing to let AI compare prices and surface discounts, but they are not prepared to hand over financial authority without clear approval, transparent recommendations and strong authentication. Agentic commerce will scale through infrastructure, not automation alone. The platforms that earn adoption will be the ones that make AI feel secure, understandable and consumer-controlled. #payments #fintech #digitalassets #crossborder #paytech #supplychain

AI agents are starting to spend money on our behalf. The real question isn't whether they'll pay. It's how we keep that spend safe. Our CPO, Robin Gandhi, talked to PYMNTS about why virtual cards are becoming the control layer for agentic payments: single use, limited by amount, merchant, and time, so a mistake or a hallucination never turns into a real loss. And the most interesting use case isn't a shopping bot. It's B2B, where agents can take on the necessary, rules-based spend businesses already understand.
