Maximizing Solar Self-Consumption for Industrial Production ☀️🔋 FFD POWER delivered two large-scale containerized battery energy storage systems for a plastics manufacturing facility, helping the customer use more of its onsite solar generation. During periods of high solar generation, surplus PV energy is stored instead of being exported or curtailed. The BESS can then discharge when production demand exceeds onsite PV output or when solar generation decreases. How should factories estimate solar PV and energy storage capacity? A successful solar + storage project starts with accurate data. A basic estimation considers: • Factory daily electricity consumption • Local peak sun hours • Daytime solar self-consumption • Battery storage requirements For example, a factory consuming 1,000 kWh/day with 4 peak sun hours may require around 250 kW of solar capacity under ideal conditions. However, industrial energy systems are more complex. Load fluctuations, electricity pricing structures, PV losses, and battery efficiency all influence the optimal system design.
