The CDR industry is good at thinking in decades. But 2030 is only four years away, and by then we need ~70 million tonnes per year of novel carbon removal. A few findings from the 3rd State of CDR report: We’re doing well on some metrics. For instance, funding of innovation is quite diverse: grants and patents scored 0.86-0.87 on a diversity index (1 = perfect distribution across methods). But speed of deployment is a different story: • The 1.5°C highest-ambition scenario requires 70 MtCO2 by 2030. 8x our current pipeline. • Country pledges fall 0.3 Gt CO2 short in 2030, widening to 5.2 Gt by 2050. In other words … We need to raise our short-term ambition! For example, Europe’s aspirational target is just 5 million tonnes of technological carbon removal per year by 2030. A start, but we need to aim beyond that. Good news is the scale-up we need isn’t impossible. Somewhere between the growth rate of early EV and solar adoption. As the report says, that’s very fast.
