🚉 Towards an attractive, multimodal mobility hub around Fürstenwalde's train station How can the area around the train station become an attractive, multimodal mobility hub? That was the focus of the first stakeholder workshop held by the city of Stadt Fürstenwalde/Spree and Institut für ökologische Wirtschaftsforschung (IÖW) as part of PolicyMix4Mobility. Participants included Deutsche Bahn's Kompetenzstelle Bahnhofsvorplatz & Anschlussmobilität (Station Forecourt & Onward Mobility Competence Center), the Kreisverwaltung Landkreis Oder-Spree (district administration), BOS Bus Services Oder-Spree, and city council members. Working in parallel groups, participants developed concrete ideas on: 🚲 the bicycle parking facility (attractiveness, e-bike charging, digital solutions) 🏗️ land use in the southern station area 🏛️ the future of the property at Eisenbahnstraße 118 (leisure, culture, gastronomy, housing) 🚉 renovation and future use of the station building The station area currently suffers from real transport-planning challenges: overcrowded bicycle parking, limited space for bus stops, and difficult connections between rail, bus, cycling, and pedestrian traffic. The workshop marked the operational kickoff to translate these challenges into concrete planning steps – with a second workshop, involving citizens directly, already planned. We are excited to share two reports from the Sustainable Urban Transitions (SUT) Lab, focusing on our pilot cities, Seville and Hannover.💫   Supported by the Bolt Urban Fund, this collaborative project brings together ETH Zürich, Bolt, and city governments to integrate diverse datasets and produce actionable recommendations for sustainable urban transport. 💡 Here's a quick look at what we covered: Hannover (5 sub-studies): We explore how to improve shared e-scooter use, parking regulation, micromobility safety, first- and last-mile public transport connections, and identify optimal mobility hub locations for seamless multimodal systems.   Seville (4 sub-studies): We examine how cycling, shared mobility, and public transport can work better together by identifying priorities for cycling infrastructure, safety hotspots, traffic bottlenecks, and opportunities to better integrate the new Metro expansion with walking, cycling, and shared mobility.   Our methodology and recommendations provide a highly transferable blueprint for other cities aiming to improve their Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) and urban livability. Helsinki has an ambitious plan to transform public space by 2050 by challenging widely accepted beliefs about how cities ought to work. Sustainable mobility solutions for low-density areas – SMOOTY study visit in Vas County From 16 to 18 June 2026, Vas County hosted the second international study visit of the SMOOTY - Sustainable MObility strategies in lOw-densiTY areas - project, co-funded by the Interreg Europe programme. Over three days, project partners and invited experts explored mobility good practices from Vas County and Szombathely, with a focus on improving accessibility in rural, peripheral and low-density areas. The programme addressed key topics such as everyday cycling, safe cycling infrastructure, data-driven mobility planning and flexible, demand-responsive transport services. Site visits in Sárvár and Bucsu offered further practical examples. These included the Zerge demand-responsive transport pilot from Zalaegerszeg, local cycling developments, the Csepregi Mobile Bakery service, village and farm caretaker services, rural minibuses and the Mobile Government Service Bus, which helps bring public administration services closer to residents in smaller settlements. The study visit concluded with a joint workshop, where participants assessed the good practices presented and discussed their transferability to other European regions. The exchange confirmed that sustainable mobility in rural areas requires complementary solutions: accessible public transport, active mobility, flexible local services, digital tools and the active involvement of local communities. #SMOOTY #InterregEurope #SustainableMobility #RuralMobility #PolicyLearning #VasCounty

Dhwani Sahetai from The Urban Lab had the opportunity to participate in Velo-city 2026, Rimini in Italy, the world's leading conference on cycling and sustainable urban mobility. The conference gave the opportunity to engage with practitioners, researchers, and city leaders from across the globe, exchanging ideas on designing streets that are safer, more inclusive, and people-centric. The experience reinforced the belief that thoughtful urban design and active mobility are key to creating healthier and more liveable cities. The highlight of the conference was the bike parade where all the delegates and locals took over the streets of Rimini and cycled their way round. She returned with fresh perspectives, meaningful connections, and renewed motivation to shape better public spaces.
