"We need to learn how we can make food production more climate resilient while also generating clean solar power efficiently." This is one of the key messages from Jochen Hauff’s recent interview with The smarter E. For too long, the conversation has framed land use as a choice between agriculture and renewable energy. Agrivoltaics (Agri-PV) challenges that assumption by demonstrating that, when designed well, land can support both food production and clean electricity generation. As Jochen explains, unlocking the full potential of Agri-PV requires more than deploying solar. It calls for closer collaboration between the energy and agriculture sectors, clearer definitions and standards, improved market data, and policy frameworks that enable farmers and developers to work together. That is why the Global Solar Council (GSC) has launched the Agri-PV Task Force to bring together industry experts, member association and partners to improve transparency, address regulatory barriers, share global best practices and help scale Agri-PV responsibly around the world. Agrivoltaics is evolving from a niche solution for land constraints into a distinct industry that combines agriculture and solar generation. Speaking to pv magazine Global, Jochen Hauff, Senior Advisor for Agrivoltaics at Global Solar Council (GSC), revealed that agrivoltaics should no longer be viewed as "solar plus farming," but as an integrated system requiring new business models, agricultural expertise, and stronger collaboration with farmers. He emphasized that successful projects must be designed with farmers, for farmers, prioritizing food production, water resilience, and community trust alongside clean energy generation. Hauff also highlighted the need for clearer global definitions of agrivoltaics, a challenge the Global Solar Council is addressing through its newly launched Agri-PV Task Force. While R&D funds or subsidies have supported many of the existing agrivoltaic systems, Jochen states that commercially viable applications are now emerging in several markets. By further improving regulatory framework conditions, the sector is ready to scale up significantly. Ultimately, he called for the solar industry to move beyond technology alone and build lasting partnerships with rural communities to unlock agrivoltaics' full potential. The growth of utility scale solar brings both opportunities and important questions for the future of American land use. As renewable energy projects expand, communities are looking for solutions that balance clean energy goals with the protection of agricultural resources. The conversation is no longer just about how much energy we can produce it’s also about where projects are built and how we preserve the land that supports food production. Innovative approaches like agrivoltaics, responsible site selection, and collaboration with farmers may help create a path where energy development and agriculture can coexist. The decisions made today will shape the future of rural communities, energy independence, and sustainable land management. #SolarEnergy #RenewableEnergy #Agrivoltaics #Sustainability
