I attended RE+ Microgrids last week, and some of the most valuable insights only became clear after stepping back and reflecting. One thing is increasingly obvious to me: 👉 The energy industry is shifting from being engineering-driven to structure-driven. A few key takeaways that reshaped how I think about this space: 1️⃣ Storage is not about selling power — it’s about participating in pricing structures The real revenue drivers are: - demand charge management - nodal price volatility (LMP) - ancillary services This behaves much closer to a market strategy than a traditional generation asset. 2️⃣ Choosing a node is essentially choosing a risk/return profile In ERCOT, different nodes exhibit completely different pricing behavior. Some are stable with limited upside, others are volatile with more opportunity. Many projects appear to be “technical decisions,” but in reality, the economics are largely determined at the point of interconnection. 3️⃣ The real value of microgrids lies in the control layer, not the assets Solar, BESS, and even gas generation are becoming increasingly standardized. What differentiates projects is the ability to optimize dispatch, forecasting, and system behavior through EMS and control strategies. This is moving from a build-and-own model to an operate-and-optimize model. 4️⃣ AI data centers are reshaping demand in a fundamental way This is not just load growth — it’s a shift in requirements: - 24/7 reliability - higher tolerance for energy cost in exchange for uptime - increasing adoption of on-site and hybrid energy systems Power and compute are becoming tightly coupled. 5️⃣ The real opportunity is in system and market design The most valuable players going forward are not just equipment providers, but those who can structure: - tariff exposure - node selection - system configuration (grid + storage + dispatchable generation) Energy is becoming a portfolio and optimization problem, not just an infrastructure problem. For me, the biggest shift is moving from thinking in terms of assets to thinking in terms of systems and market structures. Data centers could soon face mandatory energy reporting requirements. U.S. Senators Josh Hawley and Elizabeth Warren have urged the Energy Information Administration to establish mandatory annual reporting for data centers' energy consumption and grid impacts. The senators want granular data including hourly and peak energy loads, utility rates, required grid upgrades, and participation in demand response programs. This follows escalating congressional scrutiny of data centers' energy demands. Major operators like Google saw their energy consumption double between 2020 and 2024. Planned new data centers are projected to nearly triple the sector's energy demand by 2035. The letter reflects broader bipartisan momentum to regulate data center energy use. Concurrent proposals include the GRID Act requiring data centers to secure independent power sources. State-level initiatives are already underway across 20 states. The EIA, established in 1977 to monitor national energy systems, acknowledged in December that it would play an "essential player" role in data collection. The agency has been asked to respond by April 9. The project is expected to deliver more than 9 GW of dispatchable generation, largely to support the rapid growth of data centers and AI infrastructure. That kind of scale isn’t incremental—it’s transformational. What’s driving this? Demand. Every data center, every AI application, every digital service we rely on requires reliable, around-the-clock power. And projects like this make one thing clear: when the load is real, the solution has to be real too. This isn’t just about electricity—it’s about economic development. Thousands of construction jobs, long-term operations roles, and billions in investment tied directly to energy infrastructure. With regards to #electricity, we are observing how #Datacenters are shifting from large consumers to active participants in how #powersystems are designed, built, and managed. POWER AVAILABILITY CONSTRAINT Power demand for #AI-driven data centers is pushing from megawatts to gigawatts. In response, grid operators are tightening connection requirements to preserve system #reliability. Access to power ─ once a given ─ is becoming a key determinant of whether projects move forward or not. A REDESIGN OF INFRASTRUCTURE Rising #energy #volatility is forcing a redesign of infrastructure, with operators adapting their models to manage both cost and #reliability. On an operational and business level we are seeing: – Increased investment in battery energy storage systems (#BESS). – Greater reliance on long-term power purchase agreements (#PPA). – Early signs of #colocation between data centers and generation assets. A recent example is #AirTrunk ─ one of the leading data center developers and operators in APAC ─ reporting a ~US$300M investment in battery storage to support the grid in #Sydney. This goes well beyond backup power, focusing instead on load shifting, peak management, and reducing strain on an already stretched system. The transition is significant and, as energy prices become more volatile, the active integration into energy systems will only accelerate. For #AsiaPacific, where grid constraints and demand growth are even more acute than in the #US or #Europe, this evolution has the potential to reshape where and how the next wave of AI infrastructure gets built. Is the energy transition becoming a race between grid expansion and digital demand? This week’s developments suggest the answer is increasingly yes — and the scale on both sides is accelerating. On one side, grid investment is reaching historic levels. China alone plans to invest $730 B into its power networks, building ultra-large, interconnected systems to move renewable energy across the country. At the same time, projects across Europe, the US and Asia continue to expand transmission capacity, HVDC links and substation infrastructure. But in parallel, a new kind of demand is reshaping the system. AI and data centres are no longer just large consumers — they are becoming system drivers. Companies like Eaton are developing end-to-end “AI factory” infrastructure, while Siemens is building ecosystems to align computing demand with real-time grid conditions. The implication is clear: demand is becoming more dynamic, less predictable, and more tightly coupled with digital systems. This tension is already visible in infrastructure decisions. The US is planning multi-gigawatt gas hubs to stabilise supply, while utilities and regulators rethink how to connect and manage high-density loads. At the same time, initiatives like dynamic line ratings, digital twins and grid-enhancing technologies are trying to extract more capacity from existing networks without waiting years for new build-out. Meanwhile, supply constraints remain unresolved. Transformer shortages continue to delay projects from the US to India, while logistics challenges — such as transporting 400+ tonne units across continents — highlight how complex and slow physical infrastructure deployment still is. So the system is moving in two directions at once: • Massive, long-cycle grid expansion • Fast, modular, high-density digital demand And the gap between them is where risk is emerging. Taken together, the message is straightforward: the energy transition is no longer just about adding capacity — it is about synchronising infrastructure, manufacturing, and demand in real time. The rapid growth of AI data centers and electrification is putting unprecedented pressure on electricity networks, triggering what analysts describe as one of the largest grid expansion efforts in decades. According to The Wall Street Journal, utilities across the United States are preparing to invest tens of billions of dollars in new high-voltage transmission lines and infrastructure upgrades to handle surging power demand and ensure reliable electricity supply. Much of today’s grid infrastructure was built in the mid-20th century and is struggling to keep pace with modern energy needs.
