A persistent cold weather system, lingering morning fog and low cloud kept temperatures low and reduced rooftop solar generation, driving electricity demand to record winter levels yesterday. At 6:30pm (AEST), Victoria recorded a new winter maximum operational demand record of 8,955 MW, surpassing the previous record of 8,818 MW set on 25 June 2025. Yesterday morning, demand reached 8,666 MW at 9:00am (AEST), setting a new morning peak operational demand record for the state – 184 MW higher than the previous record set on Monday. These records reflect a broader trend, with increasing electrification, fuel switching, and load growth driving higher winter demand. In fact, 19 of Victoria's top 20 winter operational demand days have occurred in the past three winters, with six of the top 10 already recorded this winter. The cold conditions are forecast to continue with further records possible. These events highlight the critical role of system planning and operational readiness in maintaining a reliable electricity supply as demand continues to grow across Australia's energy systems.
Do we know what the gas demand was? If this is a sign of fuel switching then it is pretty positive but if it is just driven by the weather then perhaps less so.
Need new baseload replacement for coal as Batteries and pumped hydro will be recharging when the sun comes up . More planning needed and not more of the same thinking will work.
The new winter peak of 8,955 MW in Victoria highlights the need for a stable always‑on supply. Nuclear providing 50–60% of the always‑on component, supported by modest gas firming, would sharply reduce the operational burden created by winter troughs in solar and wind. In winter, curtailment isn’t the main issue — it’s the long periods of low renewable output and the system‑strength requirements needed to maintain frequency and voltage stability. A long‑life, always‑on technology would narrow the volatility range and make AEMO’s system planning challenge far more manageable.
Records like this are becoming the norm rather than the exception each winter. Be interesting to see how this shifts once more household batteries are online.
So as this ISP continues we will have black outs in Winter when wind is low (cold and foggy) and Solar is ineffective and batteries are depleted. We will be relying on Gas generation. But in QLD these guys are going broke. We need a total reset.

Carbon Emission Reduction Target: Australia is a nation that contributes about one percent of global carbon emissions. Other nations such as China, India, the USA, Indonesia contribute almost three quarters of global emissions, and they have no intention of reducing their emissions. If Australia closed all our industries and manufacturing and closed all of our farms that grow food, it will not affect the world's climate as explained by Australia's former Chief Scientist Alan Finkel. Yet Australia has set an emission reduction target of 62 percent by 2030 and that is increasing the cost of electricity and destroying our economy. All for no valid reason.
Nuclear now! We could have started 16 years ago. Energy Apartheid: Australia is the Southern Hemisphere leader! Germany and Austria in Europe. Very sad! Finland - similar populrion to NSW built and operates a new nuclear power plant in this time! Not too expensive for thier economy or final consumers! Bowen and Plibersek: breezes and sunlight - not in leading economies!
