The short reflection by Timo Meynhardt in this clip from HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management keeps staying with me. Why? Because leadership starts with an inner compass. And after Frank van Zomeren MSc CPC texted me about the clip and purpose washing I just had to get it off my mind. The more I think about it, the more I realise that great leaders don't simply follow expectations, opinions or the pressure of those around them. They develop what Robert Kegan calls a self-authoring mind: the ability to act from an internal system of values. And that becomes particularly important when things get difficult. It takes courage to stay true to what you believe is right, even when there is pressure to do otherwise. It takes courage to raise the uncomfortable question, even when everyone else seems to agree. Sometimes leadership means being able to hold the complexity. To learn without becoming defensive. To adapt without becoming opportunistic. To listen to others without losing your own compass. And this is also where the risk of purpose washing comes in. Purpose is easy when it remains a statement on a website or a slogan in an annual report. It only becomes meaningful when it influences real decisions, especially when living up to that purpose comes at a cost. Purpose without consequences is little more than communication. For me, that is also at the heart of Public Value. Understanding what is valuable to society and others, navigating competing values and interests and still having the courage to take responsibility for the choices you make. Perhaps the real question for leaders should be: "What do I believe is valuable and am I willing to stand for it when it becomes difficult?" Thoughts?
Can the way we think shape the way we lead? 💭✨ In this snippet from Make It Science., Prof. Dr. Timo Meynhardt explores the self-authoring mindset and why it matters for leadership. 🎙️ Watch or listen to the full episode now: https://lnkd.in/d79RvXsb Studio Schumann #HHL #Leadership #SelfAuthoringMind #BusinessSchool #PersonalDevelopment

Good trust and safety work cannot live in one person’s head. If your process is not documented, it is not truly scalable. Clear documentation does more than keep people organized. It helps teams respond more consistently, train more effectively, delegate with confidence, and reduce the pressure that comes from relying too heavily on individual judgment alone. When people understand how decisions are made and what steps to follow, the work becomes stronger and more sustainable. The goal of leadership isn't to build people who need you. It's to build people who no longer have to. Because leadership isn't measured by how much you control. It's measured by how much ownership exists when you're not there. If this episode challenged the way you think about delegation, share it with another leader who needs to hear it.
