🐪☀️ At the peak of the 2023 drought, Shindia set out from Kenya's Chalbi Desert with 108 camels on a 480 km trek to market. Only 40 made it. Yet for pastoralists across the Horn of Africa, camels remain the ultimate asset: a steady source of milk, income and resilience as the climate grows less predictable. The numbers show why. The Horn of Africa hosts 19.1 million of the world's 41.8 million camels, and demand for camel milk and meat is growing fast. But knowledge gaps in camel health, genetics and productivity, plus milk losses of up to 50% in Kenya, are holding the sector back.
