EMPWR has been a key partner to Vitamin Well Group for many years, producing Barebells protein bars for markets around the world. With manufacturing facilities in Croatia, the Netherlands, the United States and Canada, EMPWR employs more than 1,500 people and brings deep expertise and capabilities built over many years. Two deals in nutrition... and two completely different investment theses: In early June, 3i Group plc acquired a 51% stake in Laboratoire Nutergia, a French dietary supplements brand founded by a pharmacist in 1989. Double-digit organic growth for over a decade, everything manufactured in-house in Aveyron, distributed primarily through pharmacies. The Lagarde family reinvested and stays at 49%. 3i's investment falls in the €100-150m range. The priority: internationalisation from a strong domestic base. On July 2nd, Vitamin Well Group - backed by Cinven as lead investor since 2024, alongside Bridgepoint Group, who has been in the cap table since 2016, and the founders - agreed to buy EMPWR Nutrition Group from Waterland Private Equity. EMPWR is the Belgian CDMO that manufactures the full range of Barebells protein bars, operates four plants across Croatia, the Netherlands, the US and Canada, employs 1,500 people, and serves over 100 customers globally. Waterland reinvested as a minority shareholder. Two different logics, same underlying conviction. Nutergia built its moat through science and vertical integration from day one. In a fragmented market where brand differentiation is hard to sustain on marketing alone, owning your formulas and your manufacturing line creates product consistency, speeds up innovation cycles, and makes the product genuinely harder to replicate at scale. The consumer may not see it - but the product is better and that compounds over time. Vitamin Well learned the same lesson the other way. Barebells scaled fast on brand and taste, but at some point the dependency on a single external manufacturer becomes a strategic liability - in cost, in capacity, and in exit valuation. Bringing EMPWR in-house closes that gap. Both deals reflect the same reality: sports and functional nutrition remains deeply fragmented across brands, manufacturers and distribution channels. There is no dominant European platform yet. The fundamentals are strong, the consumer trend is structural, and several attractive assets remain independent. The acquisition pairs Bain Capital's healthcare and consumer investment platform with Vitabiotics' vitamins and supplements business to support international expansion.
