The vertical ladder is being dismantled. In 2026, the traditional executive climb has been replaced by the Great Flattening. Recent DDI and Careerminds reports are clear: the leaders winning today aren't the ones hoarding titles in silos. They are the ones building networks across functions. Leadership is no longer about formal authority; it’s about agility and human-centric influence. We are seeing a shift where cross-functional experience is the new gold standard for promotion. If you can’t navigate the intersection of AI, strategy, and human connection, you’re standing still. Rene Carayol has championed this for years. He’s always understood that leadership is about the human element: the "soul" of the organization that no algorithm can replicate. In this era, the most valuable executive isn't the smartest person in the room. It’s the one who makes everyone else in the room better. We are moving from a world of "Command and Control" to "Collaborate and Create." The question is: are you still climbing a ladder, or are you building a foundation? Is your leadership style evolving as fast as your technology?

I have had the privilege to work with many different business leaders. Greg is one of the few who has something extra special! We have always spoken frankly about leadership and one of the trends we are seeing is how AI is fundamentally changing the conditions for career acceleration. Great piece Greg!

Our leadership program was just ranked alongside Harvard and MIT. A huge step for our Vietnam chapter. Leadership in the AI Era was built with Dr. Brooks C. Holtom, PHD, one of the most cited researchers in the world on employee retention. Georgetown now teaches the same core concepts in their own curriculum. Three levels: lead yourself, lead others, lead the organization, all through the lens of how AI is changing the way modern leadership works. I am pleased to share that my abstract, “AI Adoption for Business Leaders: Why Practical Strategy Beats Technology Hype,” has been accepted for the 4th International Conference on Business, Management and Leadership, taking place in Oxford from 21 to 23 August 2026. The paper draws on UK research into AI adoption, management practices and digital transformation to make a simple argument: the biggest barrier to AI adoption in business is not the technology. It is leadership clarity. Most organisations approach AI as a technology project rather than a strategic business decision, which leads to investment without direction and enthusiasm without measurable return. The paper sets out a practical leadership framework built around four pillars, strategic intent, organisational readiness, people and culture, and governance, to help leaders move from tactical experimentation to genuine strategic adoption. AI is only a threat when your competitors are using it and you are not. The antidote is not more technology. It is better leadership thinking. I am looking forward to presenting this work alongside researchers and practitioners from around the world, and to bringing the discussion back to the UK business leaders I work with every day. More to follow as the conference approaches. #AIAdoption #BusinessLeadership #ICBML2026 #Oxford #LeadershipDevelopment

Today's leaders are making decisions in an environment shaped by artificial intelligence, evolving regulations, geopolitical shifts, changing workforce expectations, and an almost constant flow of information. Because of that, leadership is becoming less about having all the answers and more about being able to make good decisions when the path forward is not completely clear. Leaders have more data and more tools available than ever before, but they still need the judgment to determine what matters most and where to focus their teams. I believe that the ability to stay adaptable, focus on a few key priorities, and lead through constant change will become even more valuable for leaders as technology and business continue to evolve.
