Ireland's draft National Food Waste Prevention Roadmap 2026-2028 is now open for public consultation. EPA statistics indicate that over 700,000 tonnes of food waste were generated in Ireland in 2024, which has a huge cost for households and businesses. Tackling food loss and food waste along the supply chain and in households supports climate action, circular economy and bioeconomy, and has environmental, social and economic benefits. Ireland's second National Food Waste Prevention Roadmap (2026–2028) is out for public consultation and at Too Good To Go we're genuinely encouraged by what's in it. We welcome the roadmap's role in transposing the revised EU Waste Framework Directive, and the commitment to keep sight of the more ambitious UN SDG 12.3 target of a 50% reduction by 2030, rather than settling for the EU's lower binding minimums. Voluntary measures alone have taken food waste reduction a long way, but binding, ambitious targets are what will get us the rest of the way. We're also glad to see mandatory reporting on the table as a real avenue for reducing food waste. You can't manage what you don't measure, and consistent, mandatory data is one of the clearest levers available to government and industry alike. There's more work to do as this moves from draft to final roadmap, and we look forward to responding to the consultation, and continuing to work with Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Ireland - alongside our partners across Irish retail, food service and hospitality to help businesses of every size meet these targets.
