An additional perspective: metal hydrides are not only a promising hydrogen storage technology but can also contribute to sustainable cooling solutions. During hydrogen desorption, the process is endothermic and absorbs heat from the surroundings. This makes metal hydride systems a potential option for cooling industrial facilities and public buildings during the extreme heatwaves Europe is currently experiencing. Such systems could combine hydrogen energy storage with cooling while producing zero direct CO₂ emissions—a promising example of sector coupling between energy and climate control.
Today, one of our #hydrogen plants was shut down due to the #heatwave. Ambient temperature reached 42°C, and it was still above 40°C at 7 pm. When the project was specified a few years ago, nobody questioned the maximum ambient temperature of 40°C. However, today, the air temperature in some components reached more than 45°C, and the plant automatically went into a temporary safety shutdown, keeping the systems in idle mode. When the temperature came down later, the process was automatically restarted. Lessons learned: 1. We have to specify everything to 45°C instead of 40°C, even in central Europe. 2. Safety procedures are important, and sometimes an "incident" feels good to see with your own eyes that the system reacts as expected. 3. Filling Type IV hydrogen trailers at such temperatures needs precooling in order to be fast enough. 4. What is the "ambient temperature"? It's not the temperature the weather report tells you. It's the temperature your equipment experiences. If it's in an enclosure, that's the relevant temperature both for safety and your process. Stay safe, and stay cool. 🥵 🥵 🥵 #missionhydrogen

Humanity can no longer afford a “just good enough” approach to engineering. The principle of building it stout—designing systems to withstand the full range of conditions they may realistically encounter—must become the modern standard, not the exception. We already know the extremes our planet can produce: The official modern air‑temperature record stands at 54.0 °C (129.2 °F) in Death Valley (2013).Satellite measurements show ground surface temperatures exceeding 80 °C (176 °F) in regions such as the Lut Desert in Iran and the Sonoran Desert in North America. Even in Canada, long considered a temperate climate, we have reached 49.6 °C (121.3 °F) in Lytton, BC (2021). These are not theoretical edge cases—they are documented realities. Designing critical systems to tolerate only 40 °C is no longer responsible engineering; it is wishful thinking. It is in my own words: "just good enough." I recently repaired a shower wall where the brass inlet nipple engaged only three threads before bottoming out in the mixing valve. Three threads might technically “work,” but it is not robust, not safe, and not aligned with the standards we should expect from modern construction and design. This mindset, doing the minimum required to function under ideal conditions, mirrors this broader issue. If we intend to build infrastructure that endures a changing climate, supports growing populations, and ultimately enables us to become a space‑faring civilization, our systems must be reliable, resilient, and engineered for the full spectrum of foreseeable conditions. The era of scraping by with marginal tolerances is over. The future demands durability, robustness, reliability, servicability...
