Industry standard stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) testing may not tell the full story for newer-generation 7xxx-series aluminum alloys in aerospace applications. In an article in the journal Corrosion Science, Exponent’s Connor Slone, Ph.D., P.E., CWI, Meredith Sellers, Robert Caligiuri, and co-authors found that several newer-generation 7xxx-series aluminum alloys performed similarly to legacy materials in conventional ASTM G47 testing but showed significantly greater susceptibility to cracking in hot, humid-air environments.
