Many space technologies serve both civilian and military purposes. These include satellite communications, Earth observation, navigation, launch systems and space surveillance. They support applications such as telecommunications, weather forecasting and disaster relief, as well as military communications, reconnaissance and operational planning. As governments increase their investment in space security and resilience, these capabilities are becoming increasingly important for both commercial and defence actors. At the same time, their strategic relevance and commercial use raise questions regarding risks, regulation and the sustainable use of space.
