That, more than the vehicle itself, is what determines where electrification should start. 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬 - under roughly 50 km one way, run repeatedly through the day. Many loads, predictable and often a single charge is enough. 𝐑𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐬 - where the vehicle completes one full loop back to origin. This is where toll and CO2 advantages scale. 𝐇𝐮𝐛-𝐚𝐧𝐝-𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐤𝐞 - multiple deliveries a day returning to a central point, giving high and consistent utilisation. 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐬 - where several lanes are bundled into one optimised flow and utilisation is pushed past 80%. This is usually where the real change in economics appears. The common principle is simple. Electric freight works where the network is designed for utilisation. Not every lane qualifies on day one and that is expected. The ones that do are where you begin and you build from there. The practical first step is a network analysis of your lanes, volumes, and patterns. The Biggest Challenge in Rail Freight Isn't Capacity. It's Volatility. People often ask why rail freight operators don't simply lease more locomotives or hire more drivers when demand increases. The answer is simple. BECAUSE THE MARKET DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY. A locomotive lease typically lasts 2-3 years. Recruiting and training a locomotive driver takes 6–12 months. Market demand can change within weeks. And demand is only one part of the story. When volumes suddenly increase, border crossings such as Curtici, Kúty or Štúrovo become congested. • Locomotives spend more time waiting. • Drivers reach their working time limits. • Locomotive turnaround slows down. THE RESULT? Your fleet hasn't changed. But your effective capacity has decreased. This creates a vicious cycle: ➡️ Higher demand ➡️ Network congestion ➡️ Longer locomotive turnaround ➡️ Lower effective capacity ➡️ Apparent locomotive shortage The problem isn't always the size of the fleet.
