🎉 204 years after his birth, Gregor Mendel remains one of the most influential characters in plant breeding. Working from a monastery garden, he uncovered patterns of inheritance that laid the foundation for modern genetics. Today, we use plant breeding technologies that Mendel could hardly have imagined. Yet the principles behind breeding still trace back to Mendel's carefully recorded observations. (And we very much share his passion for peas 🫛😉) #LetsTalkBreeding

Having been to the monastery and museum in Brno many, many years ago (while studying human genetics) I can only echo how impressive and groundbreaking his work back then actually was, and the incredible and lasting impact he has had since then on genetics in human health and plants 💚💚 It is absolutely worth a visit!

Nice reminder of the Mendel's anniversary, thanks for that! However, Mendel's discoveries were anything but NOT accidental. Actually, the opposite is true! Mendel research was motivated by the Augustinian abbot, Cyril František Napp. At that time, they were interested in sheep breeding, being key for the textile industry in Brno (actually, Löw-Beer family, which built the famous Villa Tugendhat, got rich in the textile industry). Mendel spent several years by self-crossing individual pea varieties, generating inbred (i.e. genetically stable) lines that he then crossed to generate F1 and F2 generations. In evaluating his results, he used Chi square test to asses if the expected segregation ratios correspond to the expected ones.   Thus, Mendel is a great example of very systematic, hypothesis-driven approach as we know it from the recent science.
