Most aerospace programmes treat development assurance as a paper exercise. Produce the plans. Fill the checklists. Submit the evidence package. Check the box. ⚙️ It does not work. And certification authorities know it the moment they walk in the door. What EASA and FAA actually examine is not whether your documentation is complete. It is whether your engineering process is real — whether the evidence in front of them reflects decisions that were made with discipline, or documents that were assembled after the fact to describe decisions that were never properly controlled. The difference is not subtle. And the cost of getting it wrong is not either. Every safety-critical part carries a risk before it is ever made. The question is whether anyone writes it down in time. The document that gates the next stage of a programme is only as good as the failure modes that reached the page. In automotive that document is a DFMEA. Elsewhere it has other names, or none. The need does not change: know where a part will fail before you commit to making it. EURYAN derives that analysis from source. Pointed at the GM ignition switch, it surfaced 32 failure modes narrowing to three root causes, on a fault that later cost more than three billion dollars. Nothing is invented. Collins Aerospace was disposing of more than 100,000 pounds of chemical waste every year — just from wheel inspection. Strip the paint. Apply the penetrant. Inspect. Recoat. Every wheel. Every cycle. The inspection itself wasn't the problem. Everything around it was. They switched to PCRT. No stripping. No chemicals. No recoating. The wheel goes in, the data comes out, and the paint stays on. The result: over 100,000 lbs of waste eliminated annually. Inspection results that are objective and quantified rather than dependent on who ran the test. And turnaround times that no longer vary between major and minor inspections. The program earned the A4A/SAE Nondestructive Testing (NDT) Innovation Award. Sometimes the better inspection method also happens to be the cleaner one.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟯𝟬 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗲𝗹 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝘄. Fifty years past the Clean Air Act of 1970, aviation still burns the lead long gone from motor gasoline. Piston aircraft have since become the largest source of airborne lead. In 2023 the EPA issued an endangerment finding on lead emissions from piston engines, a serious public-health risk. With the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024, Congress fixed 2030 as the sunset and left the date no room to slip. Why the date holds comes down to chemistry as much as law. There is one western maker of tetra-ethyl-lead left, Innospec. The additive gives 100LL its anti-knock quality. Around 2028 to 2029 the firm plans to halt production, holding inventory to supply blending until the sunset. Because the reactors corrode with use, renewing that equipment makes little sense with the product ending. Supply from Russia or China stays doubtful, its quality keeping blenders from the liability. Once approved, a fuel still clears only the airframes named on its certificate. The eligibility list on a supplemental type certificate names the cleared makes and engine models. When a fleet needs a placard or a fuel-system change, an airworthiness directive gives the operator a firm compliance deadline. In translation, one blurred engine designation or a slipped date voids the approval. On the ramp, an inspector grounds the aircraft until the file matches the airframe. Gone by 2030 is the additive keeping the fleet aloft. What remains is the switch to an approved unleaded fuel, plus the documents behind it. Any operator outside the FAA adopts the approval through its own authority, the wording surviving the language change intact.
