How prepared is too prepared when it comes to networking? Sho Dewan challenges a real jobseeker in San Francisco, a mid-career mom looking to grow her tech career, to find out. He explains that before you can get confident, you’ve got to get uncomfortable. The career coach and founder of Workhap says, “Sometimes it can backfire when you want to have everything right before you take action.” In a new LinkedIn Learning course, Sho helps three professionals navigate the ups and downs of making connections in a tough job market. He frames networking as a muscle that needs IRL practice. Focus on connection instead of overpreparation. Why? Perfection can stall progress. Sho’s advice is put to the test at a women in tech event where our jobseeker “rips off the Band-Aid” and is pushed outside her comfort zone. Does her risk-taking pay off? This really resonates with me. Over the past few weeks, I've been stepping out of my comfort zone by engaging in more conversations here on LinkedIn. Each interaction has helped me build confidence, expand my network, and learn something new. Progress starts when we choose to participate. Thank you for sharing!
I've seen this play out so many times - people rehearse the perfect pitch, polish every word, then freeze when the moment arrives. What if the real skill isn't preparation, but learning to stay present when things don't go as planned? Curious how the jobseeker handled those unscripted moments at the event. Did she find that the messy, real interactions taught her more than any script could have?
Preparation stops being useful when it becomes a substitute for action. A little preparation reduces uncertainty. Too much often becomes a way to postpone the conversations that build real confidence.
A great reminder that meaningful networking starts with taking the first step, not waiting for the perfect moment. Consistent conversations and genuine connections often create more opportunities than perfect preparation ever will. 👏
Failure is where success hides and it’s also the best teacher that leads to learning how to eventually win.
...living with failure, due to overconfidence, sans proper/sufficient planning/training/preparation.
I love the leap that Jamie took here!! So fun working with her and the great team at LinkedIn Learning!!
