New analysis from ESI Africa examines the role of #BatteryStorage in meeting Africa's electrification goals. The COP31 Presidency's proposed target, Known as the 35×35 target, aims to raise electricity's share of final energy demand to 35% by 2035, but the continent's electricity access has grown just 2% annually over the past 13 years against a required 8.7%.   Two deployment models stand out. Mali's Fekola gold mine pairs a 30MW solar array with 17MW of battery storage, now covering 70% of daytime demand and reducing reliance on diesel generators. South Africa's Red Sands facility, at 153MW, is the continent's largest battery storage project, built through more than $2 billion in public-private financing.   The article notes regulatory gaps as a key barrier: battery energy storage is often taxed as both a generation and demand asset, and lacks a clear route to market for grid-stabilizing services.
