Conflict of interest or misunderstanding of the process? I often hear that a consultant should not develop the Fire Life Safety strategy and later inspect the project. In reality, these are separate functions with different responsibilities, and ISO 17020 requires the inspection process to remain independent. Understanding that distinction is important for consultants, contractors and clients alike. Curious to hear your thoughts. Have you come across this misconception on your projects?

We develop Fire Life Safety strategies. We also inspect fire protection system installations on the same projects. Some call that a conflict of interest. It isn't, and here's why. The FLS strategy defines the performance standard (or “requirements”). It does not select the fire doors, fire stopping products, their technical specifications, or installation methods. Those decisions are made by the design team and contractors. When we inspect, we verify whether products approved by Civil Defence, fire-tested, and certified for the application have been installed correctly by others, not reviewing our own work. Vortex is accredited to ISO 17020 by the International Accreditation Service (IAS), covering inspections of active and passive fire protection systems, including building facades. That accreditation does not just permit independent inspection; it mandates it.
