🌊 All 197 safe foundations for Hornsea 3 now complete 🚧 All 197 concrete working platforms for our Hornsea 3 Offshore Wind Farm have now been completed. Half of them have already made the journey to the UK’s Port of Tyne, from Świnoujście, Poland, where they were manufactured. These platforms are an integral part of an offshore wind farm’s foundations – designed to withstand the harsh weather conditions out at sea and keep workers safe. Designed by Ørsted and built by AARSLEFF BIZ Sp. z o. o., each platform weighs a massive 133 tonnes. Through projects like Hornsea 3, we're helping strengthen offshore wind capabilities among manufacturers in Poland. Personally still find it profoundly sad that, in the chase for lowest CAPEX, we no longer manufacture foundations in the UK. We used to be world leaders in O&G foundations and topsides and it was a fantastic source of supply chain and employment in the NE and Scotland. Out of interest, how much higher would the LCOE have been IF there had already been investment in a concrete construction site? (Appreciate for concrete the initial set up costs are high and disproportionate for a single project).

Congratulation. Concrete platforms have some key strength, But require a steady engineering, clear ER and robust fab planning as last minute changes are hard to accommodate. This is certainly no a challenge for experienced developers like Orsted and contractor like Aarsleff. Congratulation
The scale of this project is truly impressive. Beyond the infrastructure itself, I find it particularly interesting how the success of an offshore wind farm depends on the integration of engineering, manufacturing, logistics, and construction. As a Chemical and Environmental Engineering student, projects like this reinforce my motivation to contribute to the development of technologies that drive the energy transition.
Foundations are where offshore timelines usually slip, so 197 of 197 complete is a more meaningful marker than it looks from outside the sector. The detail worth noting is Swinoujscie doing the manufacturing and Port of Tyne doing the marshalling, because that supply chain took a decade to assemble and cannot be bought in. Gulf teams asking what a mature offshore capability looks like tend to study the turbines. Most of the answer sits in the ports.
