When Apple recently patched a flaw in their Beats Studio Buds many dismissed it as a minor issue. But the real story runs much deeper. Researchers uncovered critical vulnerabilities in a widely used Bluetooth chipset powering headphones from Sony Bose Jabra JBL Marshall and many more. The flaw stems from an insecure SDK that left devices open to unauthenticated access over Bluetooth. Attackers could read RAM flash memory and even write custom code. This enables remote code execution that is wormable meaning malware could hop between headphones as people walk by. Worse still hackers can extract pairing keys impersonate your device and listen to calls access contacts or issue commands to your phone. All without you noticing. A phone that still turns on is not necessarily a phone that is still safe to use. Once a device is past its security update cutoff date, the risk profile increases substantially. Newly discovered vulnerabilities may not get patched, even though that same phone is still being used for banking, e-mail, authentication apps, work accounts, photos, messages, and personal data. WI-FI needs TLC too! Is your wireless network up to the task? Even though wired networking is the most reliable and simple way of connecting many devices to the internet, the modern smartphones and tablets that have taken over many of our daily tasks heavily rely on Wi-Fi. Make sure your wireless network is up to the task and that you’re using a high-quality wireless router to cover all your bases. If you live in an area with many people, you’ve probably noticed more than just the passive-aggressive network IDs that your neighbors use—very likely you’ve had problems with your wireless connections dropping out, or just not being as fast as you’d like. This often has to do with the Wi-Fi channels in your area. If your wireless router is on the same Wi-Fi channel as a lot of your neighbors, you’ll experience a lot of interference with their networks—so it’s best to choose a different channel with fewer people on it. When you do, you’ll reduce that interference and improve your Wi-Fi signal. The first step, though, is finding out which channel is least congested in your area. These tools will help you identify which nearby networks are using which channels. Note that Wi-Fi channels overlap with nearby channels.
