What happens after the rescue? When we think about submersion injuries, we often focus on getting the patient out of the water. But for EMS... That's often where the next critical phase of patient care begins. In today's video, I share a real pediatric case that challenged the way I think about post-submersion care. The patient had regained a pulse. They were breathing on their own. They were maintaining their airway. So what should EMS do next? This isn't a discussion about treating every drowning victim the same. It's about recognizing the physiology in front of you and understanding that, in the appropriately selected spontaneously breathing patient, early stabilization may make a meaningful difference. Reassurance can soothe emotions for a short time, but it does not reduce the uncertainty caregivers face each day. Structure brings clarity: a framework for what to track, how to prepare for appointments, and which questions to ask the care team. Start by identifying the key areas of care that need attention: symptom changes, medication schedules, nutrition, and emotional support. Create simple checklists or logs for each. This turns vague worries into clear next steps. When you bring this structure to conversations with clinicians, you shift from reacting to working together. It helps caregivers feel more in control and better prepared to support their loved ones. This approach does not replace medical advice. Following an initial screening by a primary care provider, patients are referred to a specialist to confirm the diagnosis. While often diagnosed at a young age, #LMs are a lifelong condition that impact individuals of all ages.
