Commerce used to need a destination. With AI, discovery can happen everywhere: while planning a trip, reading a horoscope, watching a film, picking out a board game, or styling a room. For the Spring ’26 Edition, we built five shopping apps in just a few days that do exactly those things, turning everyday moments into shoppable ones. Each app was built by a small team on top of the Catalog API and Universal Commerce Protocol. But these apps aren’t the point. It’s that they show what’s possible with Catalog and UCP. As code becomes easier to create, the threshold for who gets to build commerce has dropped. And for merchants, anything built on Catalog is a new surface where their products can show up. As someone working with Shopify stores, this is exciting to see. More discovery surfaces mean more opportunities for merchants to reach the right customers. It'll be interesting to see how store operations and product optimization evolve alongside these AI-powered experiences.
Everyone is talking about AI shopping. Very few are talking about the data quality required to make it work. AI is only as good as the inventory, pricing, and product data behind it
This is a major shift for commerce. Discovery is no longer limited to the storefront, marketplace, or social feed. Products can now appear inside the exact moment a customer is planning, exploring, comparing, or creating. For merchants, that creates enormous opportunity—but also a new operational challenge. Being discoverable across more surfaces requires structured product data, connected systems, clear ownership, and an ecommerce operation capable of adapting quickly. The technology is lowering the barrier to building new commerce experiences. The next competitive advantage will be having the operational foundation to participate in them. Exciting to see Shopify making commerce more open, contextual, and embedded.
This reinforces something many merchants still underestimate: catalog quality is no longer just an operational concern, it’s a growth strategy. As commerce becomes more contextual and AI-driven, structured product data will determine who gets discovered and who gets left behind.
Catalog + UCP covering the full flow from discovery to post-purchase is a strong foundation. Curious how merchants will use that to build something truly owned and defensible on the retention side - that’s where the real LTV gets compounde
The true impact of AI on development isn't just writing code faster, but drastically reducing time-to-market. The fact that a small team can deploy five functional applications in days using robust APIs and universal protocols demonstrates that traditional development silos are disappearing. Operational efficiency today is measured in agility
This is the future of contextual commerce. Lowering the entry barrier while expanding product surfaces via APIs means building a marketplace or shopping experience is no longer about the destination—it’s about seamless integration into daily life. Exciting times ahead for developers and merchants alike!
This perfectly mirrors what we see every day at DaitaFix: the entry point for commerce is shifting from “search box” to “conversation.” With Shopify making products discoverable anywhere via the Catalog API and UCP, the real challenge for brands is: will your brand be visible when an AI recommends a product?
The biggest takeaway for me is that commerce is becoming embedded into experiences rather than confined to storefronts. For years, brands focused on getting customers to visit their website. Now products can potentially be discovered while someone is planning, learning, exploring, or even being entertained. That's a major shift in how merchants should think about product visibility and customer acquisition.
