Europe is beginning to think bigger about defence industrial cooperation. The European Commission has confirmed that five European Defence Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs) will each receive €60 million under the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP), marking the first funding for this new flagship instrument. The selected projects cover five critical capability areas: 🛰️ Space 🚁 Drones and counter-drone systems 🛡️ Integrated air and missile defence (including early warning) 🌊 Maritime and seabed defence 📍 Security of Europe’s Eastern Flank (Defence Industry and Space) At first glance, €60 million per project may not seem transformational. These are programmes that will ultimately require investments measured in the billions. But that misses the point. The funding is designed to catalyse long-term multinational cooperation, helping Member States align requirements, coordinate industrial participation and establish governance for programmes that no single country could realistically develop alone. For the space sector, this is particularly significant. Space is no longer treated as a supporting capability, it’s recognised as a core defence domain alongside air, land, sea and cyber. That creates new opportunities for satellite communications, Earth observation, space domain awareness, PNT resilience and other dual-use technologies. The broader signal is equally important. Europe is gradually moving beyond funding individual R&D projects toward building shared strategic capabilities. Success will ultimately depend not on the initial grants, but on whether Member States remain committed to developing, procuring and operating these systems together over the coming decade. The era of fragmented national programmes is becoming increasingly difficult to justify. The European Innovation Council takes a decisive step for Europe's strategic autonomy. As of 17 June, it opens to dual-use technologies and launches a new €100M STEP Defence Scale Up call. For the first time, an EU programme will invest direct equity — up to €30M — in defence companies. Priorities include air and missile defence, drones, and counter-drones. Closing capability gaps and reducing reliance on non-EU technology now sits at the core of Europe's freedom of action.

Wrap Technologies (NASDAQ: WRAP) has unveiled WrapShield, an autonomous defense and public safety platform designed to unify threat detection, AI-assisted decision support, and response technologies into a single operating architecture. The platform targets government agencies across defense, homeland security, critical infrastructure, and border security, with an initial focus on counter-unmanned aircraft systems. To power WrapShield's sensing layer, Wrap Technologies announced a strategic investment in Israel-based Frenel Imaging Ltd. and secured an exclusive U.S. and NATO license for Frenel's TPiCore thermal-polarimetric imaging technology. Chinese researchers have unveiled new research on a high power microwave (HPM) system capable of generating peak electromagnetic power of up to 100 gigawatts. Developed by the National University of Defense Technology, the technology is designed for electronic warfare applications that could disrupt or disable electronic systems using powerful microwave pulses. Part (6/13) - Proxy Wars Map: The U.S. Goes All-In — From the Negev Desert and Syria to the Skies of Taiwan, Israel Drives the Game Against Egypt and Turkey, While Arms Manufacturers Ramp Up Production In Saudi Arabia, under the programs of the Ministry of Defense and the Public Investment Fund, the estimated range of spending reallocation is between 20 and 50 billion dollars over the same period, where 10 to 25 billion dollars go to upgrading and integrating multi-layer air defense systems, 5 to 12 billion dollars to technology transfer and joint military manufacturing programs, and 3 to 10 billion dollars to developing the local defense industrial base in the fields of radars, military electronics, and interception systems. By integrating these levels, it becomes clear that the forward-looking impact does not operate as a linear response to a single event, but rather as a cumulative process within the global military-industrial system, where changes in the regional balance of capabilities lead to three simultaneous processes: Cycle Compression, increased investment density within existing programs (R&D Deepening), and a reallocation of priorities between defense layers (Layered Priority Shift), without reaching a comprehensive restructuring of existing industrial systems, but rather a gradual reshaping in financing, development, and operational integration directions. In parallel with the ongoing transformations in the Middle East, the strategic environment in the Indo-Pacific region shows an accelerating transition within the U.S. defense doctrine for Taiwan, where reliance is increasing on a defense model based on force dispersion rather than concentration within traditional high-value bases and platforms. This trend is based on the assumption that any future confrontation with China will not be decided by the superiority of major platforms alone, but rather by the ability of the defending side to saturate the battlefield with large numbers of unmanned systems capable of operating in a networked and synchronized manner, thereby increasing the cost of any attempt to impose air or naval control over the Taiwan Strait. Within this framework, U.S. operational modeling is moving toward strengthening what is known as the “hive” concept, which is based on deploying thousands of aerial, maritime, surface, and sub-surface drones, along with distributed sensors, mobile launch platforms, and flexible command-and-control networks, so that military capability becomes distributed across hundreds of small nodes instead of relying on a limited number of high-value strategic targets. This approach aims to reduce force vulnerability in a first strike while maintaining operational continuity even if parts of the network are disrupted or targeted.
