How often should you check in on your hearing? Dr. Marjorie Klaskin explains that adults without known concerns should have their hearing tested every 3–5 years, and once you reach age 60, annual check‑ins are recommended - even if there’s no known loss. Simple check-ins can make a meaningful difference over time.

Many people don't realise their hearing has changed until everyday conversations start to feel a little harder. Journalist Larissa Nolan shares her experience of discovering she had reduced hearing in one ear after years of adapting without realising there was a problem. Her story is a reminder that hearing loss isn't always obvious. The signs can be subtle, and many people learn to work around them without noticing. Larissa's hearing test was carried out by our audiologist Noel Cullen at our Middle Abbey Street clinic, who helped identify a change in hearing that she hadn't realised was there. If you've found yourself asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to follow conversations in noisy places, or turning up the TV a little louder, it may be time to get your hearing checked. If someone waited seven years to treat a problem they knew they had - Would you call that denial? Or would you ask what made waiting so easy? Because seven years is the the average gap between a person first noticing their hearing change and finally seeking help. It's easy to read that as a story about patients. Denial. Stigma. Stubbornness. After years working alongside clinics around the world, we've come to see it differently. Seven years isn't a measure of how patients behave. It's a measure of how hard we've made the first step. Think about what that step actually asks of someone. Book an appointment. Walk through a door that, to them, signals "old." Confront something they've been quietly afraid of for years. That's not a small ask. That's a leap. So people wait not because they don't care, but because the distance between noticing and acting is simply too wide. The most important work in hearing care isn't only making tests more accurate. It's making that first step smaller. Moving it out of the clinic and into everyday life - a pharmacy, a workplace, a moment where a quick check feels ordinary, not clinical. Turning a diagnosis into a conversation. Seven years is a gap we can choose to close. If you work in hearing care: what’s one thing that would make that first step smaller? We’re listening.

Hearing health is often overlooked until communication becomes difficult. Over the years, I've seen how early awareness and timely intervention can make a meaningful difference in a person's quality of life. Regular hearing check-ups deserve the same importance as eye exams and other preventive health screenings. Awareness is the first step toward better hearing health. #HearingHealth #PreventiveHealthcare #Audiology #HearingCare
We schedule regular eye check-ups without a second thought. But when was the last time we paid the same attention to our hearing? Hearing changes often happen gradually, making them easy to overlook. By the time they become noticeable, communication may already be more challenging. Regular hearing check-ups can help identify concerns early and support better communication, and an improved quality of life. Your hearing deserves the same care as your vision.
