Germany has spent decades treating dismissal protection as untouchable. A new government proposal just touched it anyway. The package targets three areas long considered politically sensitive: easier termination routes for higher-earning employees, a longer runway for fixed-term contracts, and a tougher line on sick leave certification. NYC published final rules implementing the 2025 amendments to the City's Earned Safe and Sick Time Act ("ESSTA"). The rules take effect on July 23, 2026. Notably, the rules replace references to "safe and sick" time or leave with the broader term "protected time off," reflecting the expanded set of purposes for which employees may now use this leave.
