Every year, the paper industry generates millions of tonnes of lignin, the natural polymer that gives wood its strength. Yet almost all of it is simply burned for energy. The FormLig project asked a different question: What if lignin became a resource instead of waste? Developed by spek DESIGN, Deutsche Institute für Textil- und Faserforschung Denkendorf (DITF), TECNARO GmbH, and BUCK, FormLig combines renewable cellulose yarns with lignin to create an innovative knitted composite. Through heat, the material can be shaped into lightweight, formable 3D structures that are compostable, microplastic-free, and made from renewable resources. 🏆Winner - Techtextil Innovation Award 2026 | Category: New Material It's a reminder that innovation isn't always about inventing something entirely new. Sometimes it's about recognizing the value of materials we've been overlooking all along. #Techtextil #InnovationAward #TechnicalTextiles #MaterialInnovation #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #TextileInnovation
