One idea from the latest Carrier 2.0 discussion stood out to me: AI shouldn't simply run on the network. It should become part of the network. That perspective, shared by Fierce Network through a discussion with Stephen Saunders MBE, Andrew Feldman, and Will Townsend, highlights an important shift. Once AI becomes part of the network, the network is no longer just transporting traffic. It's delivering intelligence. That changes more than the technology. It changes how services are designed, consumed, and ultimately monetized. Capabilities like network intelligence, edge computing, and automation create value, but that value only reaches customers if the platforms behind them can measure usage, support flexible commercial models, and evolve as quickly as the services themselves. To me, that's where the real challenge lies. The future of telecom won't be defined solely by smarter networks. The Road to AI-Native O-RAN Past. Present. Future. The future of telecom is not just Open RAN. It is AI-Native O-RAN. The journey can be understood in three phases. 📍 Phase 1: Closed Networks Traditional RAN networks were built around: • Proprietary hardware • Vendor lock-in • Closed interfaces • Hardware-centric architecture • Slow innovation • Limited flexibility Operators had limited control over innovation and multi-vendor integration. 📍 Phase 2: Open & Disaggregated O-RAN Open RAN introduced a new architecture by separating hardware and software.
