The conversation around AI in the built environment often focuses on what the technology can do. The more important question may be: "How can we use it to make better decisions?" In the latest issue of Beck’s Cost Report, Chad Schieber, Mason Blalack, and Josh Hallet explore how AI is being applied across the design-build process—from pre-development and design through preconstruction and construction. At Beck, the focus isn’t on adopting every new tool. It’s about applying AI to provide earlier insight, reveal options, improve cost certainty, support schedule reliability, and help teams manage risk without replacing the judgment and experience that drive successful projects. Read "Design Intelligence in Practice: How We’re Applying AI Across the Design-Build Process" to explore what practical AI adoption looks like across the building lifecycle. "Many organizations have seen real gains in productivity and automation from experimenting with AI. But only 34% are using AI to deeply transform their businesses, according to Deloitte’s 2026 State of Generative AI in the Enterprise report. Meanwhile, 37% are using the technology at a surface level with little or no change to underlying business processes...That may explain why so many organizations are still waiting for the transformative ROIs they expected." https://lnkd.in/e7RMWyTe

If most professionals are actively using AI, why aren't most organizations seeing the productivity gains they expected? Our 2026 State of AI for Business data found nearly half of organizations are stuck in pilot mode, with no roadmap and no clear plan for what's next. The tools aren't the problem. The approach is. The fix, according to Mike Kaput, isn't chasing the newest tool. It's building a clear picture of your actual workflow first, then matching AI to it. He calls this a "use case workbook," your personal guide for what you're testing, what's working, and what to retire. In the fast-paced world of AI, tool capabilities get replaced overnight. The problems you're solving don't. Have you mapped your own AI use cases yet? 🔗 [Link in comments]

McKinsey, MIT, PwC, and S&P are all saying the same thing about AI in business: for most companies, it isn't making a real difference. And they have the numbers to back it up: → 95% of generative AI pilots produce no measurable P&L impact. → 56% of CEOs say AI has delivered no significant financial benefit. → 42% of companies have abandoned most of their AI initiatives. But the real gap isn't AI capability or a bad roadmap, it's implementation. Most company workflows aren't built for AI and are full of inefficiencies that a bolted-on pilot can't fix. Of all the companies with an AI roadmap, only about 6% see a measurable impact from it. If you're not sure whether your company is in that 6%, let's talk: https://lnkd.in/eux84QEs We can find out exactly where your company stands, and how AI can actually make an impact.

Are you wiring AI into your business, or just sprinkling it on top? McKinsey’s most recent State of AI survey shows that while adoption is broad, only a minority of organizations are actually “rewiring” their business processes to capture enterprise‑level value from gen AI. And that'll need to change, because surface-level AI implementations are ultimately limited in their impact. For leaders under pressure to prove ROI, McKinsey's survey results break down the six dimensions (strategy, talent, operating model, technology, data, and scaling) that separate experimentation from impact, and it's worth a read. While the initial goal of many business leaders was to promote "AI everywhere, used by everyone", there's been a strong reality check in the last few months. With pay-per-use billing becoming widespread, businesses need to be mindful where they choose to deploy tools such as AI agents/bots. It's now just over a week until we run a free webinar on July 30 on "Making a success of AI agents/bots": https://lnkd.in/gSGpPVnf Following the pragmatic approach that Step Two is renowned for, the webinar will cover: * being clear what we mean by “AI” * recognising the challenges of AI agent/bot proliferation * introducing the “knowledge domains for AI” framework * mapping out opportunities and risks for AI agents/bots * targeting the best cases for AI agents/bots * exploring a practical process for teams (and organisations as a whole) See you online!
