Five years after the devastating floods of 2021, a new water level monitoring station is now officially live on the VÖLKEL premises in the Morsbach Valley. Developed in cooperation with LANUK NRW, the State Office for Nature, Environment and Climate, the station continuously measures the water level of the Morsbach and transmits the data to a publicly accessible online monitoring system. This gives neighbours, local businesses and everyone living along the Morsbachtalstraße access to current water level information at any time. During periods of heavy rainfall, this data can help people assess changing conditions earlier and make better-informed decisions. No monitoring system can prevent flooding. But reliable and accessible information can improve awareness, support preparation and help reduce risk. Taking responsibility means turning lessons from the past into practical action. But here’s the real question: Where was the water supposed to go? Rivers, streams, wetlands, and drainage channels are nature’s pathways for carrying rainwater safely away. When we build on waterways, fill wetlands, or dump waste into them, we block those natural paths. And one thing about water is this: It will always find another way—through our streets, homes, and businesses. Respecting waterways means protecting them, not occupying or polluting them. As Engineers, we can design better drainage systems, but they cannot replace nature’s own drainage network. Flood prevention begins by respecting our waterways.
