One thing I've learned in the last 12 months is that livestock emissions are a controversial topic. Enteric methane is produced in the stomachs of some animals (cattle, sheep, goats and even termites). Whilst it is a potent greenhouse gas, it's also a natural part of the biogenic carbon cycle - so there's no issue, right? Not quite... Because livestock farming has increased to so much over the last century, enteric methane has had an outsized contribution to global warming caused by human activity. But there is nuance. Optimising diet and genetics go a long way to reducing methane already. Other farming practises can, for example, ensure more carbon is captured in soil, (partially) offsetting methane emissions. Regardless of the true net climate impact of livestock farming, the fact that 20% of global methane emissions (and 5% of all greenhouse gases) come from enteric methane, make it a great target to positively impact climate change. Any reduction in methane in the atmosphere a good thing. Any change on farm must: (i) protect animal health; (ii) provide economic benefits to farmers; and (iii) Ideally work across different farming systems. There are methane inhibitors available that are proven to reduce enteric methane by >30%, which is great, but there is work to be done on points 2 and 3 to enable more widespread adoption. We're working at Triple Bio to improve the status quo, delivering solutions for farmers so they don't have to chose between sustainability and profitability.

I believe both positions miss something fundamental - the root of the challenge. I've spent the last weeks digging into the science and the system logic. If you don’t know why methane matters, here’s a number for you: methane heats the planet around 80 times more powerfully than CO₂ over 20 years 😵💫 In Switzerland, agriculture is responsible for around 14% of national greenhouse gas emissions, which is already bad enough. But when we look specifically at methane, the picture becomes even scarier: 86% of Swiss methane emissions come from agriculture (mostly from dairy and animal farming.) The good news is that there are powerful choices we get to make every single day. Actually, to be more precise, around three times a day: every time we sit down to eat, we make a decision about the kind of food system, and future at large, we want to support.
